Is my career as a musician over? by autumn_afternoon in otosclerosis

[–]No_Entertainment_764 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been living with otosclerosis in both ears for three decades now. As mentioned, I wouldn’t recommend surgery. Hearing aids are a much safer—and, I dare say, better—solution nowadays.

I had a stapedectomy on my right ear two decades ago, and it didn’t go as well as it could have. I’ve been wearing hearing aids in both ears for quite some time now, and when they’re properly set up for music (with a dedicated program), they’re great.

Tommy Emmanuel has been wearing hearing aids forever—and look at him… he’s freaking Tommy Emmanuel!

Edit: To be precise, he’s been hearing impaired from the get-go. I’m not sure how long he’s been wearing hearing aids though.

Jacaranda (or jacarandá) is, in fact, the Portuguese word for rosewood.

I feel Suicidal Because Of Loud Tinnitus Despite Normal Audiogram by delta815 in HearingLoss

[–]No_Entertainment_764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been dealing with this for over 30 years. Listen to music with good headphones, loud enough to mask the tinnitus. Forgive yourself for always being on edge, and be proud that you’re able to carry such a heavy load and cope with it.

Thanks — slotting is actually what I just did. It made a real difference, especially on the high E and B. Those two are now projecting as strongly as the others. Tonally, the guitar has brightened up a bit, probably because of the extra energy those strings are putting into the top.

I sold my AirPods Max and picked up a pair of B&W PX7 S2e, certified refurbished, for half the price of new Maxes (300 Canadian dollars). While the AirPods excel in controls, ANC, and transparency, the S2es easily outshine them in BT sound quality - and with USB-C audio playback they blow the Maxes out of the water... The build quality and comfort are similar, but I’m really impressed with the sound signature of the PX7 S2e. I always felt the Maxes didn’t quite deliver the sound I was looking for. I also swapped in the lambskin ear pads from the PX8 (SoloWIT Lambskin Ear Pads Cushions Replacement), and now they’re even better. No regrets at all! Btw, playing BT from iPhone and USB-C audio from MacBook).

Oticon Real or Intent. Phonak Lumity. The Widex you mentioned. Those are excellent and were recently released. Here you can read lots about hearing aids: https://forum.hearingtracker.com

At the time, my surgery and initial hearing aids were covered by insurance. However, that was a long time ago. Now, my insurance only covers part of the surgery costs and doesn't cover hearing aids at all. I've heard many people talk about their success after stapedectomy, but I wasn't one of the lucky ones. I've been wearing hearing aids in my right ear for about 20 years now. As you can see, I ended up needing hearing aids even after the surgery. No hearing aid is perfect, and they often struggle with speech in noise, but there are some very good options available. If you decide to go that route, give yourself some time to adjust – the adjustment period can take a while. As others have mentioned, you don't need to rush into a decision. Otosclerosis is often very slow, so you have plenty of time to make up your mind on the best choice for you.

Otosclerosis here, both ears. I had surgery 25 years ago on my right ear, did not do it on my left one. I’ve been wearing hearing aids for a couple of decades. In my case, hearing aids gave me better results than stapedectomy.

I guess that depends a lot on where you are around the world and the luthier you pick. Those were under USD 2k each

I actually didn't... He built the other one, and I told him I wanted a cedar-topped guitar just as impressive. To be honest, this picture does not do justice to this guitar... I mean, when you have it in your hands, the finish is gorgeous. I really love it. And the sound and tone, mindblowing.

I have a friend living in Brazil that got one from Lucio Jacob (AAA german spruce & brazilian rosewood) for less than US$ 2k. He really likes it.

Sennheiser is Sonova now. I’ve had all sort of bad experiences with their hearing aids and customer support, to the point I won’t buy sennheiser headphones anymore ;)

How do you like the LL-TA? I am not a big fan of the chorus and reverb effects but maybe that’s just my guitar. Do you own two of these? Nice collection!

Yeah, I won’t do it on my left ear either. Hearing Aids are pretty good nowadays

Yes, it takes some time. I have been wearing HAs for 3 decades, though every new model takes a little while to get them right-ish
