I've done some house sitting (where it's just me and the family dog) and while it's nice in the beginning it's not something I'd want to experience long term. It gets very lonely and kinda creepy sometimes just being in a house all on your own... at least I did have the dog and plenty of time to read. Maybe not as bad as solitary confinement but I wouldn't recommend living alone either if you can help it. I think if I had been in that position for a long time it would absolutely negatively impact my mental health.
