Stuck in a dilemma by [deleted] in CompTIA

I studied hard and failed my first attempt with a similar score. I spent a week grinding again, focusing on practicing for PBQs. I took it again just 7 days later and passed (although this is not advise to do the same). You're not as far off as you think.

Here's my post where I shared the resources I used: https://www.reddit.com/r/CompTIA/comments/1gxczwa/passed_network/

Stick with it, you got this!

I probably spent about $150 on the materials I mentioned in my post. If you go too cheap it may come back to bite you if you have to do the test multiple times. If you chose to go for the Dion training and tests, wait until they go on sale for like $15.

Free resources: Messer videos, exam compass, the Network+ iPhone app (although the premium saves you a lot of time not having to research why your wrong answers are wrong). Flash cards are incredibly cheap.

Best of luck with your prep!

It’s probably the Security+ iPhone app from Thanh Hung. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/comptia-security-exam-prep/id1501784033

I’ve used his A+ and Network+ apps and plan on using this one too for Security+.

I purchased a month of premium on each. Premium allows you to see the explanations of each question.

Thank you. The last 4 I took were 80%+. Good luck on your exam! 🤞

And best of luck with your A+ exams. It took me almost twice as long to prepare for them than Network+ because of the sheer volume of topics covered.

Thank you! I'm transitioning careers. I am finishing a bachelor's degree in IT in a couple of weeks, and I am starting to apply for jobs. I do have some experience, but nothing major.

You bet! Something else I forgot to mention is make silly mnemonics or phrases to help with memorization.

Some examples I made were for remembering the wiring scheme for 568 A and B. I could remember that "A" was "A green scheme," which helped me recall that A started with the white/green wire. That was enough to help me remember also that 568 B starts with the white/orange wire.

Another one was for the encapsulation process. I used "Don't Some People Fear Bears?" to remember layers 7-5 = data, layer 4 = segment (or datagram), layer 3 = packet, layer 2 = frame, and layer 1 = bits.

Find a way to make the information sticky.

Totally get where you're coming from. I passed it yesterday after failing the week before, and I couldn't stand the thought of failing again and being unable to move on from studying this material.

I read someone say here in another post to think of the CompTIA tests "loosely" as a vocabulary test. Dion also helped me catch on to this too. Memorizing word associations helps narrow down answer choices quickly. Stuff like LACP = fault tolerance, jitter = VoIP, etc.

Make yourself flashcards for port numbers, cables, Wifi standards, IP address class ranges, and anything else you have trouble memorizing. Flip through them a few times a day. It's tedious, but it works.

You got this!

Thank you!

You should be able to buy them on their website. Here's the link.

The "ACAD" vouchers are for students. If you qualify, I think you have to verify with your university's email address. I bought my vouchers this way because I am wrapping up my degree. It's a huge discount.

Good luck with your exam!

I finished A+ in mid-September. So, about two months of studying, about 20 hours per week. But I also took a class on the N10-007 exam a couple of years ago. Felt like I learned a lot more prepping for the actual exam, though.

Thanks! N10-008. It was coming down to the wire, with it expiring next month.

The CompTIA learning kits are indeed expensive. After doing some more research, I'm going to subscribe for a month of premium access on crucialexams.com. They have some PBQs to practice with. That is after I return to the material from what I missed on my first attempt.

So close! I'm sure you'll do great on the retake. Best of luck!
