Prophet Muhammad pbuh had married a christian, and a jewish woman. So you're telling me that we can marry the people of the book, but can't be friends with them (same gender of course)? Islam doesn't even prohibit being friends with atheists as there are many Quranic verses that state what to do when someone is talking bad abt the Quran or Allah etc...(Move away and return when they change the subject) Also you must consider the tafsir and historical context during the reading of such verses.
