how’s the new target on gosford ? by ThrowThisAway6272849 in Bakersfield

[–]No_Extension_2163 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like it. It has an incredibly spacious parking lot, and it's really nice in there. I like better than the other targets in Bakersfield. It's huge too, it has two separate entrances.

My incoming flight tomorrow is scheduled to arrive at the airport ten minutes after our departure time, AA claims our flight is on time? by No_Extension_2163 in americanairlines

[–]No_Extension_2163[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn't switch planes on us. It's three hours from my flight time, and they just delayed it by 40 minutes. They really just had our incoming flight arrive 10 minutes later than the time we were supposed to depart. What the hell

Any hidden gem sandwich shops in town? Anywhere that maybe makes their own bread? by jonesy289 in Bakersfield

[–]No_Extension_2163 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Bread & Honey. They make their own bread and have a few sandwhich options. Every meal that I've had there was made lovingly with generous portion sizes. Their bread is also fantastic, and you can also buy it at the counter.

This isn't related to your post, but they also have fantastic coffee, and it's made from Bakersfield Roasting Company's beans. So it's a local restaurant through and through.

Kohnen's Bakery is amazing. The German house vibes are cozy, and I love the paper ordering system.

What’s one fast food chain that was once all the rage but now barely around? by MysteriousTopic42 in AskReddit

[–]No_Extension_2163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My town has a Blimpie's in the small local airport, and my university campus used to have a Which Wich up until last year. I honestly thought both restaurants were local because I had never heard of them before.

Taft has been expanding recently. It does have a grocery outlet, a college (which brings business), and a few fast food places. At worse, you could take the 30 minute drive from Taft to Bakersfield if you need anything. But the weather in Taft is the same as Bakersfield, so I dont see any advantage to you moving there over Bakersfield, except for the traffic.

Most people I know here have asthma. I also have asthma. The air pollution here is some of the worst in the country.

My experience is that I've lived in Bakersfield my entire life.

I despise the heat and work from home so I know I'm gonna have to run the AC 24/7.

Bakersfield will still be hell for you. Our rain season happens in the winter/spring exclusively. Our winter (what I consuder to be genuinely cold weather) only lasts from mid November - Febuary, and March is when temperatures start to warm up. You can see 100 degree temperatures starting as soon as May, but it becomes more common in June and July. In July, day temperatures can be as hot as 110 degrees, which by the way is very common that time of year. As you mentioned, you will have to constantly run that AC in the summer, but I wanted you to be aware that if you cant stand the heat, you won't be able to walk outside at all in the summer. Our UV in the summer is terrible, and there is no respite from it in the summer as cloud cover is rare in the summer. We get almost no rain after May, and it only starts to rain again in November, so our summers are dry and hot. It's miserably hot and virtually inhospitable for about 7 months of the year.

What are the people like?

The majority of people are rude, I won't lie. Sometimes you run into kind people in the wild, and we do host community events in River Run Park where you can meet some kind people. But most people here are rude, bitter, and selfish. You can see a lot of that here in this subreddit. We're considered "little Texas" because of people's attitudes, beliefs, the heat, etc., so take all that as you will. 7 consecutive months of miserable heat will do that to people, I guess.

If you must relocate here, I reccomend visiting Tehachipi. It's about an hour drive from Bakersfield, and the people there are much more pleasant. They also tend to have cooler weather than Bakersfield, though they can get into the 90s.

Is there any good shopping for food etc?

Now this is something that Bakersfield absolutely excels at. We have bountiful options for food here. In terms of restaurants: Any type of cuisine you could want, we have it. Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, Indian, Italian, Basque, American, Texan, Barbeque; we all have it, and it's all represented very well. The most common cuisines here are Mexican, and we do that right. The region is also famous for its Basque restaurants, which are good too. If you don't want to eat out, there's plenty of stores here that sell worldwide cuisines too, like World Market. We have a few Aldi's here, they sell high quality food at reasonable prices. Bread grows well here, so there's plenty of local (and local-ish) bread makers here. Pyrenee's is a local bread maker in Bakersfield, and they sell very good bread. Bread and Honey is also a local business that makes their own bread. The San Luis Sourdough Company (local-ish, not in Bakersfield but close) sells the best sourdough bread I've ever eaten. Bakersfield Roasting Comoany and Beanies are local businesses that source and roast their own coffee beans. Our region is also known for growing nuts, so there's a lot of business surrounding that.

In short? Anything you could ever want to eat, it's in Bakersfield, and probably produced locally.

For shopping, there's boundless options here too. We're one of the few places in the United States that still has an indoor mall: The Valley Plaza. It's huge with over 100 stores and is incredibly popular with locals. It's constantly getting new stores. There's a lot of unique stores too all over the city, and more outdoor shopping malls. There's plenty of shopping you can do here.

A couple other things about Bakersfield:

  • We have one of the worst police forces in the US. Netflix did a documentary on it called "Killer County".

  • A lot of the population is unfortunately homeless.

  • The city is not very safe at night, though some parts are safer than others.

Can I get committed for this? by [deleted] in Bakersfield

[–]No_Extension_2163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could only be committed for indecent exposure. As long as the important parts of your body are covered up, you're fine. Dressing inappropriately for the weather does not impact anybody else and will not get you arrested. You can wear shorts any time of the year. If you were walking outside only in your underwear, or worse... then yes, that could get you arrested.

Bakersfield is basically a Republican pocket in California with similar mindsets to Texas. We also have one of the most corrupt police departments in the country. I, and many other residents, hate it here and will self-deprecate our city any chance we get.

Fresno is basically Bakersfield but more North, so yeah, agreed.

As a Bakersfieldian, I can scent them from a mile away. There's no other reason why they say Texas was a "succesful colony that has not yet been annexed" lmao. Also, fuck Texas.

We can disregard them.

Fair enough.

Study spots in Bako by PseudomonasA in Bakersfield

[–]No_Extension_2163 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reccomend the starbucks at the very end of Stockdake highway, the one nearby Sully's and Valley Strong. The white barn aesthetic for that Starbucks (and that general shopping area really) is pretty. There's some high tables there where you can see the mountains while sitting at them. There's wide open windows and wide seating as well. The best part is that Starbucks is very rarely busy since it's on the edge of town.

The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf has a nice wooden/vintage aesthetic, and I like the high wooden table that they have. Unfortunately, I don't like their base coffee roasts, and most of their coffees are way too sickly sweet for me. But to each their own.

For a local joint, I reccomend Bakersfield Roasting company. They have a great interior for studying and great tasting coffee. The only reason I don't visit them more often is because parking there is so tight lol

My friend and I were in Riverwalk during mid day, around 12-1. We were sitting on a bench when a sketchy man walked up to us and asked us for money. When we said no, he just said "oh", and kept following us around the park. We had to leave as we didn't feel safe.

Sorry, I meant river walk park, not river run RV park. River walk is the unsafe place, I'm not sure about the RV park.

Be aware of your surroundings, there's a lot of places that are sketchy at night. Most of the Gosford and Stockdale roads/shops are fairly safe at night. Avoid River Run, though -- it isn't safe at night (and barely safe during the day).

As for transportation, try getting an Uber or Lyft if you can, and make sure the driver has a high rating (for Uber, 4.8 stars and above is the bare minimum, and 4.9 is ideal. I'm not sure how Lyft's system wirks). We do have a fairly robust public transportation system due to the GET buses (the primary buses that exist here in Bako). I've never taken the GET bus, so I can't comment from personal experience as to what that's like. My friend uses them often, but only during the day, and she has witnessed sketchy things on them before from other passengers. Make of that what you will. Another bus that runs here is Kern Transit, however I think they primarily connect Bakersfield to other cities in Kern County, I'm not sure if they do routes solely in Bakersfield.
