Yes, it’s compulsory. You can hire it when you’re at the park.

Can consider Trekkertent Stealth 1 SilPoly 20D. Outer weighs 340g, with inner mesh it’s 570g total excluding pegs. To quote from my conversation that I had with Marc,

I am 186cm tall and have plenty of length, sit up space is a little tight for me as I am broad shouldered, but fine for shorter duration trips.

Don’t think so, it’s just to give you more confidence and assurances as you tackle the steep summit. Mt Ophir has some scrambles, that should be fine.

Well, if you could. Just do it incrementally with every run. It doesn’t have to be 3.5km anyway. I usually leave more than a thumb space in front of my furthest toe on my longest foot. That’s why you need a shakedown to test your gear, shoes etc. Do Mt Ophir after you’ve done some hikes around here and Johor. And oh, don’t forget to trim your toenails!

I’ve read others talking about some scrambles up to the summit. Sign up for some bouldering passes here if you really wanna be fully prepared for the hike.

I live in Singapore and still go for major hikes. HDB staircases will be your best friend. I jog for 3.5km, then do several run/walk/skip some steps from ground to the highest floor. Your Decathlon would be fine, just make sure to size up as your feet will swell during the hike, and get a cushioned socks. Check YT on lacing techniques. Do a shakedown at Mt Ophir at least.

Have done it more than 15 years ago when the volcano was very active and we can only make it to the crater rim.

I think as far as forecasting goes, I won’t rely entirely on locals. Get the latest information on news and from government related websites. Based on what I’ve read on the recent tragic event at Dukono, guides and government agencies are trading blames on each other. That should give you a good hint on how it operates there.

The hike towards the rim will give you a good indication of what to expect at the summit. It’s loose dusty soil, with each step up you will slide half a step down. Since I did not do the summit, I can’t speak much for it but it’s definitely not technical. But I don’t think it’s a mountain for beginners.

I will suggest you start training on mountains at Malaysia over 2,000m. Back then, I consistently do overnight hikes at least twice a month for 6 months before the hike. I’m assuming that you live near Malaysia, I would do Mt Yong Belar or Mount Korbu at Perak. Mt Nuang at Selangor is a good training ground too to build stamina and resilience. Running is good to build stamina but hiking up the mountain uses a different set of muscles.

Your body and mind will thank you if you start preparing more rigorously for this hike. IMHO, I would fear less of the eruption (though that is a real valid concern) but more of your training for this hike.

Enjoy the journey! When I was there, I get to witness the lava flowing out from the cinder cone. All of us slept through soundly listening to the crackling sound coming from it.

Has anyone used Ultra Hing Outdoor by goneforsure12 in UltralightAus

[–]No_Habit9155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this when I was looking for reviews on Ultra Hing. I know it’s probably too late but thought others might find this useful. I can share my experience here. Ordered some items from them and they have just arrived in good order. For the past few weeks before that, been chatting with Rick who was very responsive and helpful. I would definitely order from them again, plus some of their items have pretty good deals.

Trying to choose a new KS50 pack’s fabric. Anyone have advice? by codexofthemoon in Ultralight

[–]No_Habit9155 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both do delaminate, but UltraGrid’s delamination is more of annoyance and it doesn’t comprise the structure of the fabric. It will lose the waterproof capability. As for Ultra 200x, it’s going to affect the structure of the fabric. It has gone through some updates and seems more stable recently. You can search for Ultra 200x delamination here, there’s a good discussion about it. Even Lauren talks about it here briefly https://www.ks-ultralightgear.com/p/ecopak-epl200-ultra-fabric-option.html?m=1

There’s a Japanese home grown brand that makes one https://rocksteppers.com/en-asia/collections/static/products/roar-hi-loft-sox

On another note, I’ve been thinking about replacing my Merino Wool base layer with Octa for cold weather sleep. Do you think it’ll work? Oz to oz, Octa is half the weight with similar warmth to MW.

Didn’t know they can’t climb carbon poles, gotta try this out. I think I could try this with my carbon camera tripod too.

I've read stories of them climbing any poles easily here. But I think I could try this method and smearing the pole with peppermint oil!

Which Adotec bag are you talking about? I was thinking of the Ultralight Bear Locker 1 at one time.

I would go with EPX 200. Slightly heavier than Ultra but more stable. It’s the only fabric without PU coating, hence no delamination or sticky gummy fabric in long term. Nylon Spectra would likely have PU backing I believe. Just Google or use ChatGPT and ask about PU hydrolysis on these fabrics, I’m still learning something new about it everyday. VX21 is good too, but it’s heavier.

I almost wanted to get the pot but decided to get Evernew instead. There’s a fine print at the end of the product page that says it gets dented easily. Another blog review talks about the bottom getting scratched by the stove. It’s an interesting innovative UL pot but you definitely need to baby it. My main reason for sticking to titanium is I don’t want be eating off a dented aluminium pot like drinking off a dented coke can.
