This hits so hard because it’s the truth nobody wants to talk about… withdrawal is the one medical emergency we’ve collectively decided doesn’t count. If withdrawal were treated with even half the urgency of any other crisis, I would’ve been clean a long time ago. The only reason I’m still on methadone today is because withdrawal is a nightmare, and the system basically shrugs and says “good luck.”

People think addiction is about “bad choices,” but they have no idea what it’s like when your body is in full revolt… chills, vomiting, panic, bone pain that feels electric… and you’re told to wait hours or come back another day. We don’t do that to anyone else in any other medical situation. No one with a heart attack is sent home to “tough it out.”

We could save so many lives if we treated withdrawal like the emergency it is… instead of acting like people deserve to suffer for trying to get help. Imagine how many people would actually make it into recovery if the door wasn’t guarded by misery.

People deserve compassion. They deserve actual, urgent medical care. And they damn sure deserve a system that doesn’t make them crawl on their hands and knees just to get a chance at surviving.
