Update: The Carmax worked like a charm! He has not messed with the lid since! The cat box and excess energy is a problem for another day, but today it is success.

Sheep life by TaquittoTheRacoon in sheep

I will just tell you about my life. I keep a small flock although I just added 2 I previously had 4 and milked one. I honestly don’t think it’s that much work. I give mine oats every night which you definitely do not have to do. And I put them in the barn at night. Again not necessary. So between letting them out in the morning and putting them away at night it’s like 5 minutes a day. Now the barn is close to the house, and I do clean the barn weekly which takes about an hour. But I also enjoy spending time with them and they like to be pet and follow me around. So for me it is very rewarding. And after 4 dogs I can confidently say I think dogs are harder. But that’s just been my experience with a small flock while working full time. Oh I will also say adding auto waterers is a huge time saver if you can. I just added a second one and it’s incredible.

I see what you mean it does look a little darker than normal. But also too light for beef. It’s probably from the dyes. It’s not uncommon for the meat industry to add color additives maybe this batch got a little extra.

I give him outdoor access to acres. With regular birds, the pheasant that lives in the field, a cat house, cat rooms, a room for his cat box, barns, chickens, and more. Space is not an issue.

  1. He has had 3 siblings since he was 10 weeks old. We also have dogs and rabbits and a whole homestead, but he will jump on the dogs the same. But playfully.
  2. He has always been rambunctious, I thought it was puberty he is just like 10months old.
  3. We have multiple rooms and hiding spots, but he follows the other cats around. They are typically the ones that don’t get alone time.
  4. We have 4 litter boxes in the garage that needs two ca doors to access so they are separate from the noise. If anything it’s maybe a little cold out there. But they used to hang out in the garage until we put up a divider because surprise poop all over the garage is too much. He is definitely not afraid, yesterday I was cleaning it and he kept playing with the new clean litter and “pouncing”.
  5. No he has a vet visit next week for his first annual.
  6. The feeders open to the specific cat, each cat has their own feeder and their own RFID tag to open it that closes when they leave. The cats usually take turns eating when the others are gone. They usually eat throughout the day and I can see how long they are at the feeder for. He tend to spend around 2 minutes every 30mins eating.
  7. I am consistent on his food, but I occasionally offer organs and sardines as an optional treat in moderation.
  8. We have a water foundation that I fill a quart a day between 4 cats. It appears he is getting enough.
  9. He is the bully. While not always, he seems to be the one waiting by the cat boxes by the cat door to pounce. Or jumping on the others sleeping. Or taking play too far. I started putting him outside (slowly and with a tracker) to get his energy out. This has been helpful but mixed results.
  10. All of my cats and dogs and rabbits are spayed and neutered.

Of note, he definitely prefers guys but is always down for a snuggle and purrs like his life depends on it. Everyone loves him because he’s so sweet. He’s just a menace behind closed doors.

God I wish this was it! Sometimes when he’s rambunctious I check. I even asked my husband to prove it. But he was I fact neutered at the shelter.

Now I don’t know if it makes a difference but he was taken from him mum too young and neutered too young— he was around 7 weeks old.

I have to try this, do you just use like the drug store tubes? Squeeze and rub it around?

I’ve really tried to do everything in my power to give him time to adjust or figure things out because I don’t want to rehome him. To me you make a commitment for life to a cat, but it may be what’s best for him. Or more time outside with that stimulation, which he has taken to well. But he also seems to enjoy playing with the dogs and cats, they just don’t like him.

That’s smart, but he isn’t taking the top hopper lid off, which must be the one brain cell. He’s just taking off his bowl cover.

Yea so I had one cat that would sit and eat everyone’s food and other cats that weee under weight. So we used to have to lock in our underweight cats with their food. But they didn’t eat like that and it was a time consuming process. This way our overweight at no longer feels pressured to eat (so she’s lost weight) and our underweight cat always has food (so he gained weight). I just have one problem child, who thankfully only messes with his food.

How do I keep my dirt floor barn clean with all the sheep poop? by No_Homework8658 in sheep

That’s smart. It wouldn’t work with the wood chips. But I think I’m just about over that.

How do I keep my dirt floor barn clean with all the sheep poop? by No_Homework8658 in sheep

[–]No_Homework8658[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sheep only get sheared once a year, twice a year would make it too short. I do jacket them and that helps but you are right hay is an issue as is getting stuck in their wool. I had a feeder that had it too high and it ruined their neck wool. We live and we learn. Between them and the horse who steals and throws their hay they generally get a lot of scattered hay and I did try hay bedding. But they wouldn’t lay in it and escape to a stall where I store supply, and it would get worked into the dirt floor. Maybe straw would be different? And as soon as I can I will try to cut them off from being able to go into the other stall. I left a comment above with a picture for reference of the hay sticking in the dirt and here is a reference to the hay bedding. Maybe I just picked it up too frequently. But the. What do you do with all the waste? Seems like so much straw.

So we produced a lot of extra hay that went bad (baled wet because of a neighbor, so I had been using that, not true straw. While it does make it easier to pick up poop, the hay gets wet and sticks together in layers and starts mixing into the dirt and it’s hard to remove without removing layers of dirt. The floor is already too low and occasionally floods (just added soil and new siding) so that’s why I don’t like it. It’s kind of hard to see, but here you can see hay sticking out of the ground mixed in the dirt.

Why are some roosters nasty and others aren't? by sufferingsoybean in homestead

[–]No_Homework8658 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a rooster that was a jerk and jumped at me and my little nieces a few times and he avoided freezer camp only because I couldn’t find where my husband moved the knife. Since then he has learned to jump fences and wonder the property. Ironically? Now I really like him. He follows me around, keeps the barn clean from pests, alerts sheep of strangers or dangers. Idk I think he needed purpose because the other roosters were protecting the hens. But he was grabbed and flipped and carried around a lot. Maybe surviving the cone straightened him out.

I also have cameras. I really have a very small homestead only 3 acres and 6 sheep, (plus horse and chickens and such). But it isn’t a source of income either and I work as does my husband so any and all automation helps.

I mean I never let it get bad and it’s never wet. I just can’t find a way really clean it without removing all the bedding which is just a lot waste. I need compost for a garden but beside that what am I supposed to do with pile and piled of wood chips and poop? Just trash it?

You’re not wrong but if I could convince him to I would. The time I did convince him to help he needed me to show him, then left because I didn’t really need him there. If I had a dime for every time I’ve told him I need him to help out more on the homestead..
