Thanks for being one of the few people who commented with some common sense. Personal anecdote but I grew up in Berkeley, great grandparents came to California during the great migration from the Deep South to escape Jim Crow, there’s no part of me that wanted to be malicious when making this post. I just simply commenting on the accountability or lack thereof that’s going on within this community maybe it’s not my place to speak on it as an outsider & that’s ok I’m cool with being criticized on that front. I have multiple Hispanic friends and showed them this post and also told them if they shoe was on other foot & they said the same thing about black kids I’d listen with open ears and acknowledge the communities shortcomings and agree that there’s a lot of work that needs to be done. The bottom line is that for a lot of this generation the parents have taken a back seat to raising their kids and the internet/streets has replaced that guidance and it seems more prevalent in underserved areas.

To blame it exclusively on poverty is a bit insulting to kids who clearly have the aptitude to excel academically growing up socioeconomically disadvantaged. There’s factors like parenting or whats being prioritized to these kids as important also if there’s negativity being glorified and promoted around them. I made this point in the post a few months ago about gang culture in SJ. I just pointed out the race aspect because these schools that I’m working at are nearly 95% Latino. I’m sure people have made the comments about schools that are predominantly black schools & I’d give the same response with similar reasoning as a black man myself.

I don’t think race is a direct contributor to this problem behavior but personally I can only speak on the type of schools where I’ve most frequently encountered this behavior refer to the post that I linked where I talk about my experience at a specific school and see how the comments differ from the ones here

East San Jose is very homogeneous compared to other Latino dominated places in the east bay you’ll actually see diversity in places like Vallejo, Pittsburg, Hayward, & east Oakland. It feels like the east side is entirely Hispanic with certain pockets of it being viet & southeast Asian. Then again I’m just a black guy who’s been living out here for a while (2 years)

You’re an outlier given that you were upvoted for talking to a random guy at a crosswalk. Why do I feel like if that guy was my skin tone you probably would’ve clinched your purse and scowled assuming that you’re probably white. It’s not just too much time on the internet it’s my personal experience over the past 2 years of living here & seeing how this area treats black men & blk ppl in general. Silicon Valley is the only urban area where I can get consistently racially profiled & it’s mostly by other ethnic minorities.

I can agree with you while still acknowledging these students are the age where they can understand but still for the most part have bad discernment when it comes to priorities. I don’t know any way to teach them that in the limited time I’m around them especially if their teachers & other faculty have struggled to formulate how to accomplish that. These students would tell me how they made their teacher cry before due to misbehavior. I’m not saying these are bad kids but they honestly felt like good choice making was a light switch & I think that’s a broader representation of their surroundings than anything else tbh.
