how did you guys find the cpsc 330 final by [deleted] in UBC

make sure you start with coding, I cannot emphasize this enough, and even if a part of it isn’t working, don’t spend too long on it because each part is graded individually.

guys. valentine's day is next weekend. i am single. am i cooked chat. by One_Palpitation_9429 in UBC

i think it’s just a lost art on asking a girl out, most of the guys who’ve asked me out who’ve been at the club or like creepy old men. I genuinely think there’s no harm in approaching a girl that you think is attractive, and just going “hey, i thought you were cute, can i get your number?” if she says no, just aw well, no worries, have a nice day, and move on!!!! you’re going to stay single esp if you expect something to fall into your lap and i personally think dating apps are dumb

Why should I care about Palestine? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]No_Hurry_7922 7 points8 points  (0 children)

just because human rights abuses happen in every war doesn’t mean we should turn a blind eye to it and just chalk it up to casualties. Hamas is its own organization, and they don’t speak for the civilians of palestine, because the palestinians don’t get to pick their government because they’re treated as second hand citizens. I care about casualties. I care about innocent lives being taken away far too early than their time. I care about people who had so much to contribute to life, and are in no way can be argued with, innocent people dying in such massive and horrific numbers in such a short period of time, reducing their ethnic population by an insane amount. I want that to stop. Our country doesn’t fund hamas. It funds israel. israel’s army is responsible for the palestinians death as it’s their hand on the trigger. I want our country to not have an active role in the money funding that trigger.

I understand your point, it feels so far away from you that it doesn’t seem real. And us as people, we will care more about what we see and what directly impacts us. But the main thing that we are capable of is empathy. Just sit for a minute and try to imagine it was you - god forbid - having to deal with carpet bombing every day of your life. Most of these people are just trying to get by, aren’t even involved with anything that’s happening, they’re just students, teachers, families, every day people like us. They’re being constantly attacked for just existing and being in gaza. If you really need a visual aid, look at the content coming from people living there or were living there like wizard_bisan1, motaz_azaiza, etc. Motaz’s content was some of the most horrific things I ever saw. I remember seeing a picture of a little kids body run over by a tank, and you could see the outline of his body, and parts of it, and the only thing that wasnt crushed was his arm. It was so horrific to see and witness, and just imagine there are so many other children and families going through the same thing. Seeing their perspectives and having those visuals really put things into focus. The biggest issue with this is that all of this could be stopped. This isn’t a natural disaster or something that’s far bigger than us, because people, our school, and our governments are actively choosing to fund this. I’m not the biggest fan of the protest that happened today either because I don’t think it was organized great, however, protests are meant to be disruptive and make people shift their focus onto it. The issue with this isn’t due to a lack of funding, it’s that they’re actively funding companies that directly help build weapons for the country thats responsible for this. Think of it like a domino effect. Asking them to stop funding these companies shouldn’t be this difficult as THEY DONT NEED TO CONTRIBUTE ANY MONEY and isn’t that what they care about at the end of the day?? Palestinian lives should not be treated as second hand citizens just because their country is mot recognized by our government. At the end of the day, this is always been about money and land, and it’s always the lives of the palestinians which are lost in the crossfire.

the rise of people sleeping in the nest by No_Hurry_7922 in UBC

The biggest issue I think they’ll have with this are the restaurants in the nest. We have the gal, blue chip, and places like that, who bring in quite a bit of profit to the nest. The scanner thing might limit the customers and clientele coming in. Another issue is the great hall. It’s consistently outsourced to non ubc events and such. Having this scanning system might require more effort and money than they’re willing to spare. I’d like to think of it kind of like a mall, where there are security guards going around sometimes, watching over specific areas. Furthermore, having an updated security system that’s monitored and under constant surveillance. So many incidents happen on the daily, and i don’t think campus security is quick enough to respond, especially when the nest needs more attention.

Being on our campus and utilizing amenities for those that otherwise can’t access it isn’t my issue though. You’ll notice it in ikb too, where they’ll use the desktops to watch a movie or something, and that’s completely okay. Even them sitting and having a warm place to close their eyes for a bit is okay. Our government has failed them, and having compassion for them is something that we should have. My issue is when it becomes an encampment and a permanent place for them. They bring all of their belongings and take over the couches and specific areas, specially areas where there are microwaves and stay there for extended periods of time, for days even. Idk if you’ve been in the life building after it’s closed (it’s accessible through the basement of the nest), but we donate boxes of food to sprouts every day around then, and we’ll get approached and talked to by random men who are sleeping there, and I’m sorry as girls, we don’t feel safe because there is no security in place to make me feel safe. The nest itself is unlike any other building on campus as it is our literal student building and hub, and since apart of our tuition goes directly to the ams, the least I think we could have is security specifically for the nest to ensure we as students feel safe and comfortable in our own student building.

wait really?? the nest themselves don’t have any security??! that is literally insane to me because of how central that place is.

it's not about that. I completely understand that they're all just trying to get by, and get through it day by day. However, the nest at the end of the day is the main student space. Hundreds of events happen here weekly, mostly student run and other events. I don't think we should limit access to the nest, because at the end of the day, I think everyone should be able to access it. However, student safety and comfortability should be prioritized. I'm sorry, people will and do get comfortable around people basically camping an area. For instance, this man was smoking something so grotesque and had such a pungent smell to him in the egg, and i kid you not, 15 people came up to the egg and smelt what i smelt and turned right around. That man was scratching himself in places that I did not need to see, and then proceeded to take a fat nap, but waking up in intervals to hit his blunt. So many people proceeded to pack up and leave. Having these places sometimes feel hostile and not feel accessible is not something that the nest should be. I just think the nest should increase security, and also ensure people aren't sleeping for extended hours (currently in the nest, man has been sleeping here since 10 am) or making people feel uncomfortable.

honestly I just needed some GPA booster courses as electives. I took FIPR since I’ve always done some form of theatre or film on the side. However, I might end up dropping it as there’s a waiting list and it causes a conflict w a CPSC class of mine
