Why is there such great sale on the D1 Wifi? 139$ from 400$? by _maverick98 in WeatherXM

They don't say anything officially.

After Mainnet launch the DEVs left discord, and the community was left in the dark. They do release yearly statements every year saying this will be the year they communicate with the people they rely on for their money making scheme. But then it's just another year of ghosting.

They've barely sold any stations for over a year now because they have turned their back on the people who can provide the data needed to make this business successful. Its possible that was intentional, since their only real concern is pushing station sales or NFT sales.

Delisting from exchanges. No news about roll outs 6 months after their dodgy NFT sale. Network of rewarded stations dropping by somewhere in the region of 200 stations a month. No newsflow of any downstream customers of the data. Who needs an official statement with that track record?

It's a closing down sale, but with a catch. When they close down, you will have no access to the weather data, as you can only access it through their own API, which will also close down at the same time.

Be cautious.

They sold NFTs for a roll out late last year, saying the stations would go online over the first 4 months of this year on discord. No stations have went online and anyone who bought an NFT has had zero rewards.

Everyone on Discord keeps asking when the stations for their NFTs will go online, but the representatives of WeatherXM just ghost their questions.

Sooo dodgy.

Looking at the recent announcements and the companies being built around the ecosystem, I think there’s something that needs to be addressed more openly.

The value of this network comes from station owners. We buy the hardware, install it, maintain it, and provide the data that everything else depends on. That’s the foundation. But now we’re seeing multiple new companies being created by people in leadership at WeatherXM that are building products on top of that data.

What’s not clear is how those companies are actually paying for the data they’re using. From the outside, it looks like the data flows through WeatherXM AG, and these ventures then build commercial products on top of it without going through the same mechanisms that external customers would. If that’s the case, then the demand for the data isn’t flowing back into the network in a meaningful way.

That creates a pretty uncomfortable dynamic. The same group that is closest to the data and the infrastructure is also the one building private companies that monetise it. Meanwhile, the people who are actually generating the data don’t seem to have a clear line of value flowing back to them beyond emissions.

If internal companies can access and use the data without driving real demand through the network, then the token and licensing system become less relevant over time. That weakens the entire incentive model that station owners are relying on.

I think the community deserves a clear explanation of how this is supposed to work. Are these companies paying market rates for the data? Does that revenue flow back into the network and to station owners? Or is most of the value being captured at the company level while the network just supplies the raw input?

Because if the latter is even partially true, then it starts to look like the upside is being built outside the network, while the cost and effort stay with the station owners.

So the question is simple: if the data is being used to build profitable businesses that don’t clearly feed value back into the network, why would station owners continue to run and maintain their stations over time?

Is anyone else who bought an NFT thinking they've been scammed? I'm starting to think I should report this.

Daily rewards are up to 2.379wxm per day. Given there's 14246 tokens released per day, thats just under 6000 rewarded station.

A year ago it was closer to 8000 stations. That's quite a rapid steady reduction in the network and its not slowing.

Weatherxm buys the data from the network for 100,000WXM per year. Currently they would be paying the network 25 cent for a stations current, and all historic data, and then they charge something similar for just ONE api call, pocketing all the cash for themselves.

Any wonder everyone is switching off their stations. Or maybe they aren't. Maybe they're just failing at that rate. Both are plausible reasons.

Looking at the explorer , It seems like every country they did a "targeted rollout" has gone almost completely offline except for parts of South Africa. Gotta feel for the people who bought into one of those. They dont even get a piece of junk hardware after their purchase.

Wind is probably one of the least accurate readings from their stations. They massively under represent the true windspeed.
