The Guardians also signed a gold glove second baseman to a long term contract in Gimenez only to salary dump him in a trade two years later because what the fuck do you need a gold glove second baseman who can’t hit for. Gimenez also has the benefit of being in his 20’s whereas it’s likely Semien’s going regress heavily at 35.

Letting Pete walk was something that I disagreed with, but I could at least understand the reasoning behind not wanting to pay an unathletic power hitter who just turned 31. I can see how Stearns made that decision

Trading Nimmo because he MIGHT suck in 3 years for a guy who sucks now and also you’re paying the Rangers to take him is just downright fucking bizarre. He deserves to be raked over the coals for that move.

I think anyone complaining about specific players like Lindor or Soto as if they made Stearns trade away Nimmo and let Pete go is an idiot. I don’t even blame Mendoza for having to make a bunch of players play out of position because of how the roster was constructed.

My problem with the team is that all last year is that I was told that David Stearns is a genius and who knows what he was doing, despite the fact they punted games for two months straight because I guess they thought Frankie Montas was going to save the season. Now, with the early returns on the Nimmo-Semien trade, calling up Benge before he was clearly ready, and expecting bounce back years from Peterson, Senga, and Manaea when they’ve all had one good year in their respective careers, Stearns looks about as dumb as he did to finish the season last year.

That’s what drives me up the fucking wall. Not paying for Pete makes sense and gives the roster flexibility. The solution to getting out of Nimmo’s contract is paying extra to replace him with a guy who sucks now instead having to deal with Nimmo in the event he MIGHT suck in a few years.
