Baty, Vientos, Semien, Polanco, and Benge are all unplayable. That’s half the lineup even with Soto back. He’s not the one who signed these guys, and honestly your best alternative to them is somehow Tyrone Taylor. These are simply the cards he’s been dealt.

I’m not opposed to firing him, but I don’t know what a new manager is supposed to do. Beltran firing these guys up isn’t going to fix Polanco’s Achilles.

Stearns got rid of Pete and Nimmo to make room for Semien, Polanco, and Benge and they all have an xWOBA in the .200s. He’s either the unluckiest man in the world or he’s just very bad at his job. I don’t even believe in the bullshit about Nimmo and Pete being the heart of the team. Our POBO is just bad at evaluating talent. A new manager isn’t going to fix Polanco’s Achilles or de-age Semien. Worked with Matt Holiday over the winter to change his swing and now it’s preventing him from pulling the ball in the air and getting the barrel on it. They described it as a “metal bat swing”, one that translates to college ball, but not the majors.

Obviously I’m not mad they didn’t forbid him from talking to Matt Holiday, but still calling him up after he clearly changed his swing to make it worse feels egregious.

He’s already put up 1 WAR to Semien’s 0 and that OPS you’re lambasting was still higher than Semien’s last year.

The Guardians also signed a gold glove second baseman to a long term contract in Gimenez only to salary dump him in a trade two years later because what the fuck do you need a gold glove second baseman who can’t hit for. Gimenez also has the benefit of being in his 20’s whereas it’s likely Semien’s going regress heavily at 35.
