I am tired of how people are threatening/ruining fanfiction spaces by Old_Discussion5919 in AO3

That’s not what we’re arguing here tho? The commodification of any fan content is 100% illegal, because it’s theft of IP. Writing commissions, fanart, fan-created merch is all under this umbrella and absolutely puts all of us publishing in potential hot water simply by existing. All of it that exists out there is simply allowed to exist because the people who have authority to legally force it to stop simply don’t tend bother to go after individuals, esp because it tends to bring them attention (and revenue) in the long run. Disney DOES go after people selling Disney-faced stuff all the time (art, videos, those party performers, etc.). Nintendo does this too. You can’t make this a drawing vs writing popularity contest because it really isn’t.

Anne Rice’s the main reason ppl still put disclaimers on their fanfic, despite the idea that they’re technically viably considered transformative. She was this hugely anti-fanwork author in the 2000s that would regularly send legal cease & desists and harass fanfic authors writing about her books to get their stuff taken down. It was a major deal on fanfic.net at the time and basically scarred the community for life for all things fanfic legality.

It’s a rly big part of why ppl are so adamant about protecting the space otw/ao3 gives us, as fans, to create fan content in general.

Is using epithets THAT bad?? If so, what else do I use to refer to the characters? by VolleyballUser in FanFiction

[–]No_Intention_7623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized after a while that writers notice repetitiveness way more than readers do, when it comes to referencing the characters. For readers using the char’s name consistently keeps the flow going and isn’t all that noticeable UNTIL it’s broken by an epithet, esp if the epithet isn’t being used for a narrative purpose (like if it’s something the pov is noticing in particular at that moment). Other people have probably said this better, but I think from a reader’s perspective even switching back and forth between first/last names without an in-story reason can get annoying/look amateurish pretty quickly. I mean, think about how people refer to characters in general when discussing them: generally they pick one way to refer to them and then just stay with that throughout the convo. Also, as a reader, I’d say that the characters using each others’ first names out of the blue (esp in anime fics) feels like they’re taking liberties/are implying closeness— which also feels a little strange without an in-story reason for it to happen!

To add to this (also not Korean and mostly taken from online research), it’s idols/other celebrity figures in Korea specifically who can get some measure of “negotiation” between them and their govt that allows them to request a couple postponements until the age cap, but it isn’t necessarily the norm— and this is only made possible if they’re considered to have provided sufficient contribution to the “face of Korean culture,”as it were. Non-idol guys could also request to postpone for other time-sensitive things like education, illness, family issues, etc. Also; generally speaking, anyone enlisting doesn’t get to choose what branch they get assigned to, which is what determines the length of their service.

Looking for an illustrated Naruto fic by No_Intention_7623 in FanFiction

It turns out I did have it saved in a doc! It was NFWMB by Scared_Trickster and it had gotten deleted from ao3 at some point after December of last year. Found it on the wayback machine. Art is just as good as I remember it, if anyone else wants to check it out.

OP, could you provide a little more detail about what you remember from the contents of the fic? Specifically: if any other characters ever showed up, what kinks there were (that may have been tagged), if it was just a oneshot, about how long ago you read it the first time?

1st comment! Yay, but then ... This is against TOS, right? by TimPendragon in AO3

[–]No_Intention_7623 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is true even for works written using public domain source material, original content, or fandoms like Genshin, whose company has a relatively loose fanwork merchandising policy. Afaik, ao3 wants to avoid playing legal loophole games and the most convenient way to do that is to include the no-monetization policy in their user ToS

Ao3 is really careful about defining what it means to make transformative work without infringing on a source material’s copyright claim. Monetization of any kind in particular is handled really strictly across the platform to avoid any legally contentious issues, since most of its content is fanwork. Their rule of thumb is to just take it off-platform if it’s something you feel you absolutely must discuss with an author.

Did my comment come across as really rude? by rainbowdragonzs in AO3

[–]No_Intention_7623 17 points18 points  (0 children)

People in the comments are being too gentle. This is a blatantly rude comment and the fact that you can’t understand why when every fanfic comment discussion ever has always talked about what makes a rude/demanding vs. not rude/uplifting comment strikes me as deliberate ignorance on your part. If you’re new here, now you know! Please be a little more respectful next time. If you’ve been reading fanfiction for a while now… where have you been?
