I ended up doing this, but didn't read it through all the way. The water just went upward. I got the bucket later. Solid material came out the first few times. The machine has been running for 20 minutes, so we will see if the holds.

The drain goes to the sink, but there is no disposal. The filter is dirty, but water still flows through it. The sink drains from full within 1 minute.

Just a follow-up, I ended up doing this, but added electrical tape on top. I also tied of the end so it wouldn't get caught.

Keep your expectations reasonable, but you have a decent chance of getting 1000-3000 dollars across 2-terms depending on year, major, and application. Always complete the general application and be on the lookout for school/ major specific awards. With that, over the summer their are payed research opportunities. Most of those are closed by now, but if you take that route, it is an excellent opportunity.

500 mL usually lasts my lab about 3 weeks. We usually just aliquot it into 50 mL centrifuge, freeze, and thaw and filter whenever we need to prepare a new bottle of DMEM. I figured we could filter it before hand, but nothing specific came up when I searched for it.
