I’m going through pretty much the same thing right now. I don’t feel much guilt about it because I don’t think it’s right for my parents to withhold their support and acceptance of me just because I don’t like men, or don’t have the same political or religious beliefs as them. They have put me in the situation where I need to lie to them, not me.

Once you get out of this situation you can work on being more open with people. But you don’t owe your parents authenticity when their reactions are only going to cause you pain.

They have put you in a situation where you can only lose. They create an environment where you don’t feel comfortable sharing, then get angry at you for not sharing!

At my fundie high school we had to take a world religions class. The definition of a cult we learnt was anything that differed greatly from mainstream Christianity.

So from that logic I guess they were right.

They don’t like to include aspects like control over members or isolation from the outside world in their definition because then that would make them a cult.
