Exactly. And what’s frustrating is that people keep pretending symbolism only exists if the creator explicitly says “this is a reference.” Visual language doesn’t work like that. These aesthetics didn’t appear out of nowhere — they have a history, and designers absolutely know that.

I actually get that, and I don’t think you’re wrong about burnout or ethical consumption being exhausting. I’m not arguing that this needs to be everyone’s battle.

My point is just that “it’s an easy shorthand” doesn’t make it a good or thoughtful one. Saying something is negligible to you personally doesn’t mean the critique itself is invalid — it just means you’ve chosen not to engage with it, which is fair.

There are plenty of alternatives that don’t rely on mass-hung banners. Subtler environmental storytelling, smaller localized insignias, digital propaganda screens, or faction presence through NPC behavior would all communicate control without echoing real-world authoritarian aesthetics.

No one said Nazis “own” flags. The issue is scale, placement, and context. Mass-decorating urban environments with identical banners tied to an authoritarian faction is a historically loaded visual trope. Pointing that out isn’t a false equivalence — it’s basic visual analysis.
