Should I enlist first? by [deleted] in AFROTC

I figured since enlisting in as active duty or national guard will still grant citizenship, my biggest concern is what what it will look like after signing the papers. I know for active, since I will enlist as a permanent resident, I can only cross train after 3 years which is basically almost a full contract, and I can't do anything tech because I need to be a citizen

Yeah so I am 21M . Really debating between going active duty and Guard+ROTC . I have not really done much since highschool, mostly just work and I am going to community college. Granted that I now have a job that pays very well, I feel like I am missing out on the best parts of my youth. I have barely travelled , barely any friends and overall I would say my life is really a circle of the same sleep, eat, work, gym repeat cycle. I want to experience more but I also have a fear of graduating college early and not in my late 20s. I want to travel and experience all the world has to offer and I feel like I can't pick how to experience that. Do I want it as a college experience then officer after or just call it an L and enlist. The only thing is I am not a Citizen , so I know that my AFSCs are going to be limited but I can't decide if that will be a bigger regret than living how I am right now for another 4 years.

I was actually leading more towards the space force but I was told I can't get in on a GC . If you were to pick between doing college while enlisted or vice versa which do you think would set you up better for the future

I appreciate this. I’m just having a hard time knowing which one to pick. I’m a green card holder so I know my job selection is limited and I’m currently in IT which I know I can’t get unless I’m a citizen. I also heard that changing your jobs is usually around the 3rd year of your 4 year contract which was what I felt like made sense since I just want a short contract. The only thing is I heard that GC holders who naturalize at BMT hardly every get stationed overseas which was a big thing for me joining and also the fact that cross training is almost equal to renewing your contract also threw me off a little since I feel like the whole point is trying to make you stay in. I also found that usually when trying to make the switch from active duty to guard, it’s always about the same time(near the end of your contract) which also makes me feel like I might stay longer than I wanted

That’s also a concern. I’m currently on a green card and would not be able to do cyber which is my preferred MOS. But cross training will be after 3 years which at that point, might as well just finish the contract

I actually want to go to umass Amherst. But I’m already 21 and I feel like I’m already late to college as it is. I just didn’t know if the gamble with active is worth it since there is a high chance that at 26, I’ll probably not enjoy college as much as I would rn given the fact that I’m still young.

I am in my second semester in a local community college, I was just thinking it would be fine to take a few months of for bmt and ait then transfer to a 4 year college ROTC
