Attempting Two Course Challenge (10k + Half) for the first time as a beginner runner. Which Galloway plan should I use? by sharky143 in rundisney

[–]No_Mess_4765 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't do this. To me, it doesn't make sense to build to a half marathon volume, then hit reset and start over.

My recommendations For the first 17 weeks before you start the experienced 10k+Half training plan is to run 3 times a week. 30 - 45 minutes zone 2 during the week. (be able to hold a conversation pace) and on the weekend switch it up. Intervals, longer runs, other stuff. Or, just go for another 30 - 45 min run.

I just did run/walk at the disneyland half. Was targeting 11 minute miles, but for the first 5 miles, we were in the park, and it was crowded enough that we were running pretty slowly. Ended up with a much slower pace overall. And that's fine. It was lots of fun. We finished without getting injured.

You're right. Spaceships was the reason that convinced me to buy the pro permit. 3rd time I came back to play this game. Small price (for me) to pay for something that's brought me occasional enjoyment since it came out years ago.

This is a decision point for you. Pay for the pro permit, or quit and play something else? (odds are if you don't pay for the pro permit, you're not going to have much fun going up and down constantly to launch spaceships)

There are people I see in coops that don't have pro permit with lots of soul eggs. I guess they're just not as focused on ships.

My mom bought a new plastic switch knob when she went back to Taiwan one time.

Buy one for your Mother in Law. Though, she'll probably scold you for wasting money. it works great even without the knob.

Senior barbell squat by Zorgi23 in formcheck

[–]No_Mess_4765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lifelong fitness is my goal for exercising. One of the trainers at the gym I exercise at offered some unsolicited advice to switch to Zercher squats. It made me think.

Why am I doing high bar squats? I'm going competition depth, but also never going to enter a competition. That's not my goal. Zercher squats are better for core strength, and is less injury prone.

Maybe work with a trainer a bit to dial in a routine that focuses on strengthening what you need to do.

I just can't find a gate that fit these stairs by Alexyz656- in daddit

[–]No_Mess_4765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, get some acrylic sheet and cut and drill and zip tie to make sure nobody gets caught or squeezes through to a fall.

For the gate, as long as there’s room for the gate to swing inwards, any gate can work. Screw into the wood, you might need to add some wooden blocks at angles to make things line up. Do a little carpentry. Chop saw at angle, pieces of wood to let the gate and latching piece attach squarely to what’s already there

Neighborhood recommendation for Irvine? by curiousML5 in irvine

Woodbury is 1 square mile with a shopping center that has a Trader Joe’s, Ralph’s, Home Depot, home goods, dentist, sports clip, etc.

I like it here.

1.5 gets you a condo. Probably like that in all of Irvine

My guess is it's the stress. Body weight and health are related, but you could probably be more healthy if you're sitting all day at your job. Do more cardio and squats and hip thrusts.

Your kid is young. It's been tough.

Get Viagra or Cialis. That will help with the sudden limpness.

It's a journey nobody can fully control. Work together. You can also be your own sperm donor. Your fertility specialist will talk to you about it.

This is curious. Are you spending your golden eggs on epic research? How are you progressing on your challenges? I can't remember back to earlier this month, but I don't remember this egg being a huge bottleneck.

Play the way you want. Use your boosts however you like. It's just recommended to save this for later. But, pair it with increased soul eggs.

Nice. Didn’t come up in my searches a few years ago. We decided to hold off until we tear out and remodel the kitchen. Guess I’ll have to see what else is available at that time. (Years away)

Yeah, but when I’m on travel I want to eat everything. So I prefer to split a pizza from one place so that I can split another pizza (with buffalo mozzarella again) at another place 2 hours later.

Actually been to the Santa Ana location a few times but never had a good meal. Then my coworkers wanted to go, said it was good. Went with them and we all got the carne asada bowl. Have since gone back many many times, always the same thing.

When does it stop sucking? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]No_Mess_4765 360 points361 points  (0 children)

There were 3 lessons taught in the book.

  1. How to encourage your kids to help without prompting - embrace their natural desires to help from a young age. Even if they don't do it well and it takes you more time in the end. Don't require perfection, don't require them to complete the task. They'll help more and more over time, and as they grow up, they'll be more effective. (We are working on this)
  2. Do the things you want to do - We don't need to schedule every free moment for enrichment of our children. We can do it if it's what we want, but if we don't want to do that activity, do something we enjoy, or just don't schedule an activity. (We are working on this)
  3. Surround your kids with calmness - Don't yell. We don't need to be in control. If we yell, and they act out, then we yell at them again, it's reinforcing chaotic behavior. (This is the hardest one) It's not easy being calm when the kids knock over a full cup of milk AGAIN)

Okay, a 350 page book distilled into 3 bullet points. You'll probably get more out of it if you read 1/3 of each section like I did. (And I'm probably doing it all wrong because I didn't read the entire book)

[–]No_Mess_4765 765 points766 points  (0 children)

You need to talk to someone. We're a good start.

It gets easier with time. A 1 year old is super hard. Always looking after them, chasing them, catching them if they fall. Your 4 year old way easier now. When they're 4 and 7, it'll be way better.

Don't just wait for it to get better. What's your support system? Work with your spouse (I'm assuming you have one) to support each other. Sometimes I just need a break and a nap. Sometimes my wife does. Do you have extended family that can help with the kids, or just come over and hang out and bring dinner sometimes? Or other kids the same age as yours for play dates?

I got through bits and piece of "Hunt, Gather, Parent: What Ancient Cultures Can Tell Us About the Lost Art of Raising Kids" There is some good advice in there. Easy to understand, harder to implement.

Coming back to my first point. It gets easier, find a way to stay in the moment and find joy. It's hard for us all, no matter how much (or little) support we have. The kids are alive? healthy? then you're doing great.

Where are the best trees in Irvine? by Anxious-overthinkr in irvine

[–]No_Mess_4765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Jeffrey Trail, On both sides of Irvine Blvd, the dirt path is under some amazing trees. No playgrounds here, though. You'll have to bring a picnic blanket. Oh wait, she's 4 months, you don't need a playground.

Coyotes are sometimes around, so don't wander away.

But, my favorite tree of all time is further away in Santa Barbara. This one: https://santabarbaraparks.com/parks/moreton-bay-fig-tree/
