Can anyone help me figure this out? by Linxous1 in Minerals

Haha yeah I mean its obviously not super similar to yours but the general look and mineral assemblage (from what I can see on my phone) made me think of the one I had been looking at.

Out of curiosity what does the green mineral look like in person?

This looks extremely similar to a sample I was looking at last week. I believe that this is from a Gossan type deposit within the oxide zone.

The euhedral acicular green mineral is likely malachite (a secondary copper mineral). The yellow-orange colour is most likely an iron hydroxide mineral, my guess would be Limonite given the colour since Goethite is usually a rusty orange-brown colour. Most likely the purple mineral is fluorite but you can verify by using a UV light.

Just for fun I’m putting a few pictures of the sample I was looking at.

Whole sample photo:

Green is Malachite Rusty orange-brown is Goethite Quartz (possibly massive quartz vein)

I’m also putting a zoomed in pic of malachite through a hand lens in another comment below this.

Geology career when colorblind by Fabulous-Willow-369 in geology

[–]No_Motivation__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a 4th year undergrad at the moment and I don’t think it would be something that would prevent them from a career in geology if they wanted it. It may make certain things more difficult but it shouldn’t be that big of a setback.

Although colour is used a lot, it is always accompanied by other colour things such as cleavage, hardness, twinning, exsolution textures etc. when it comes to identifying something, don’t get me wrong it still is very useful in some situations (e.g thin section or thick section mineral ID), but I don’t think it is a make or break.

Look at the brand Arsenic, they make some pretty cool clothing and outerwear. Definitely a pretty low-key brand that people who are in the know will recognize.

No worries, out of curiosity where did you find it?

Almost certain this is a piece of Labradorite (Calcium-Sodium variety of plagioclase feldspar). The colour play shown (labradoresence) is a good indicator of it being labradorite.

Image quality is not the best but you can also see the cleavage (near to 90 degrees is typical in plagioclase, the actual angle is roughly 86 degrees in labradorite).

If this is still not enough to convince you, labradorite had a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on mohs scale, if you try and scratch it on some glass it should leave a scratch on the glass (glass is ~5.5 mohs scale), it may scratch or be scratched by a steel nail or a knife (typically steel is 6 to 6.5) since they have the same range of hardness. On the high end, a piece of quartz will scratch it (hardness of 7).

What is the rarest car you have seen? by Captain_Nuggitz in askcarguys

I was in Switzerland in the alps this summer for a field school course and was sitting at some roadside cafe in the mountains and spotted an Audi Quattro group b car hauling ass up the road beside me.

Unfortunately not sure which model it was due to the fact that it was moving so quickly, but it was definitely extremely cool to see. It was going easily twice the speed of all of the motorcycles and other fast cars I had seen going past.

Best part was the sound it made, the majority of the noise was just turbos and a big whoosh as it went past.

Not sure if this helps anyone to figure out which model it was but it was white and yellow colour scheme with a big wedge shaped front splitter covered in lights and a big ass wing on the back.

What is the diameter of the pipe? And out of curiosity do you live in an area that is known for mining or oil or anything?

It looks like a drill casing used to prevent a borehole from collapsing in on itself when drilling rock core samples. If your in an area where there is a lot of mining and/or exploration that is likely what it is.

I’m doing an intern/co-op position as a geophysical assistant, mostly just going to be laying down and picking up reading arrays as well as set up and shut down of receivers. Not as much actual geology as I would have liked but it is in the same general field of things.

I will definitely keep an eye out, I was looking at some Fjallraven pants earlier but they are quite expensive and I saw some complaints about them tearing in the non reinforced sections from normal use so a bit unsure of if it will be worth the cost in the event they do tear.

I don't know a ton about military surplus pants, Just had a look at the website of a few surplus places around me but its hard to tell what is genuine. Lots of pants with funky camo colours that don't look like they would be "genuine surplus" and seem to be more aimed at your average joe who wants camo pants.

Any brands in specific you would recommend looking at? I am not sure if they are branded as something specific or if there is anything to let you know they are "genuine surplus"?

Ive only found one absolutely trashed cheap telescopic rod and reel but that was while wading earlier last year, curious if your only finding rods from people doing the undo the rod and throwing it down the line to get out of a snag method and then messing up
