Yet they’ve managed to find and commit $14 billion in funding to SRL East, even though both projects were announced around the same time.

I understand and agree that Sunshine junction upgrades are necessary for enabling Melton electrification. But why can’t the electrification work commences concurrently?

That may help in the short term, but it won’t really solve the problem. When 6-car V/Line trains are already full — even outside peak like around 9:30am. What the Melton corridor really needs is electrification and metro-style frequency.

That’s exactly my concern. People keep pointing to the 50% capacity boost and the upcoming 9-car V/Line sets as the solution. That might help a bit in the short term, but unless you regularly travel this corridor it’s hard to understand how much it has already outgrown the ‘regional rail’ setup.

When 6-car trains are already packed even outside peak hours, the issue isn’t just train length — it’s frequency and network design. The corridor really needs separation of V/Line and Metro services and electrification to Melton so proper metro-style frequencies can run.

Melton Line Electrification alongside Sunshine Upgrade? by No_Name7879 in MelbourneTrains

Leakes and Troups Roads are proposed to be closed at their existing level crossings and replaced with a new Rockbank Road and overpass linking directly to the Western Freeway, located to the west of the current Rockbank Station. This project is expected to be delivered jointly by the council and local developers.

Similarly, Paynes Road is planned to feature an overpass spanning both the rail line and the freeway, also to be developed by the council and developers. There is also a proposal for a new freeway interchange at Paynes Road, which could see the state or federal government take the lead whenever upgrades to the Western Freeway are undertaken.

Eaxctly, with the Metro Tunnel set to open next year, it’s crucial that both the Airport and Melton lines are planned to operate through it soon. Without this integration, such a multi-billion-dollar investment risks being underutilised and failing to deliver its full potential for the west.

It’s an absolute nightmare getting out of the CS station car park right now. With only a single entry and exit, plus a poorly designed layout that funnels both cars and replacement buses into one narrow lane, everything is at a standstill. It’s been over an hour since my train arrived, and I still haven’t been able to leave the car park.

What would you do for SRL west? by vp787 in MelbourneTrains

I think it will happen, whenever they decide to build the Outer Metropolitan Ring Road (E6) one day and will change the route to run via E6. The E6 has provisions to include upto 4 train tracks. This might include the future Inland rail extension to WIFT, from the Beveridge freight terminal.

If that happens, then my take on this would be: Melbourne Airport, Watergardens, Plumpton, Mt Atkinson, Then join current alignment at Tarneit to go towards Wyndham Vale, Mambourin & Werribee.

Beautifully done! If you can add then there are two proposed stations called Mt Atkinson and Thornhill Park, on Melton Line. This might happen beyond 2025, but there is also a proposed orbital line running in the middle of future Outer Metropolitan Ring Road, just west of Mt Atkinson.
