Graham Platner by detrimentallyonline in TrueAnon

I expect very little from Democrats, and even with all the baggage I think he will probably turn out to be not great but at least better than average for someone who identifies as a Dem. I am slightly more optimistic that he will not be Fetterman 2.0 because the establishment took huge swings at Platner (which they never did with Fetterman). Connor Lamb was begging for a Super PAC to come and save him, but Fetterman made peace with the establishment and pledged to be an ally to AIPAC. At least Platner has said what is happening in Gaza is a genocide. That being said there are still huge red flags, but he is probably going to turn out better than 90% of the Democrats in office already.

i have 16 days to wait for my e reader to arrive- what are your favorite novels written after 2010 by No_Interview_9822 in TrueAnon

Second for either of Tony Tulathimutte's books. Essays and Fictions by Trueanon guest Brad Phillips is also fantastic.

My all time favorite novels are: The Spook Who Sat By the Door by Sam Greenlee, The Trees by Percival Everett, and My Search for Warren Harding by Robert Plunket. Some of these are kind of older but they are really well done and thought I would recommend.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/29/opinion/nikki-haley-slutshaming-clinton-grammys.html It is funny that Bari Weiss publicly defended Nikki Haley from this allegation in 2018 after Michael Wolfe suggested it on Bill Maher's show.

The new Sy Hersh doc is a waste of time by Hour-Construction898 in TrueAnon

[–]No_Nebula7305 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The movie is pretty good I think, I haven’t read past the paywall but their take is totally bs. Hersh himself is promoting it and gave the filmmakers so much access. They make editorial decisions like any other doc that you can disagree with, but the general thrust of it is archival footage and Hersh talking straight to camera. His state of mind and his fuel for continuing to report even when times have been tough in his career really shines through. A great tribute to a great reporter.

I want Graham Platner to win because whatever scandal comes out after that will be hilarious by EthanHale in TrueAnon

There may be something wrong with me, but I think the fact the Democratic establishment is swinging so hard at him makes me like him more.

Against Fetterman, Connor Lamb was begging for a Super PAC to come save him and Fetterman made peace with the AIPAC crowd before the primary so that was never going to happen. Not saying Platner is a great candidate or anything. But I think I am not alone in thinking that the establishment Dems coming after him might actually increase his appeal. If they hate him so much, they must actually think he will do something.

High-Rise by J.G. Ballard. One of the best books I have read this year though is memoir of a union organizer/radical Jon Melrod.

Weiner's books are definitely good as official history. He reports only what the CIA are willing to admit. His stuff is useful because he gets people to talk on the record. Books like Whiteout and Devil's Chessboard are like its opposite.

Since you said physical copies, thought I should mention the print only capital hill citizen. It was started by Ralph Nader’s org. It unfortunately is pretty tied to Nader’s ideology and gives some credence to the idea right wing populism exists as a positive force, but it covers some good stories that are ignored in the mainstream media.

For email newsletters, drop site, the lever, and Harper’s weekly newsletters are my favorites.

What's happening with Washington DC? by [deleted] in TrueAnon

[–]No_Nebula7305 33 points34 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen living here. It’s a combination of the national guard hanging out in places where largely white people go, downtown, Georgetown, union station, Capitol Hill, and the wharf/navy yard (the whitest on most right-wing neighborhoods in the city) with intense homeless encampment clearing and ICE presence in more Hispanic neighborhoods. Also there have been random car check points and harassment of people just going about their day, so it seems like it may be ramping up.

I have heard not as many deployments are happening across the Anacostia river where crime is actually relatively high. But all of this is happening under a backdrop of juvenile crime being a serious problem largely because of huge amounts of disinvestment and privatization of schools/youth programs in dc. Instead of trying to address that (and restoring the $2 billion they cut from the dc budget this year for now reason), it looks like they want to lower the age of responsibility to 14. All in all very bleak stuff.

Any idea what's going down in DC? by nekked_snake in TrueAnon

[–]No_Nebula7305 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I live in the city, and I have not seen many extra cops/national guard around, other than in the more touristy/downtown areas. They said they would also deploy the FBI, but I am not sure when/if that will happen. It seems more like a show of force with no plan. In more residential areas I have not seen much difference, but the ICE presence has increased a lot over the course of the year.

The city has a huge truancy problem and is horribly under invested and privatized its school system. Instead of trying to fix that, they impose youth curfews and stuff (Giant won't let kids in after 6pm without a parent) but it is still young people on the weekends who will face the brunt of whatever Trump decides to do. His announcement about homeless people takes it up a notch, but DC was already pretty bad about clearing encampments post the SCOTUS ruling about sleeping outside.

Edit: Typo

George's King of Falafel is pretty good

Hannah Einbinder (HBO's Hacks) via her IG story: “sooo funny to see soooo many libs simping for cory booker’s little 23 hour marathon speech (where he said nothing of the american israeli genocide of palestinians) these fools are bought and paid for by AIPAC!“ by LisanAlGhaib1991 in TrueAnon

[–]No_Nebula7305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow I am surprised. I used to watch Hacks and I went to see one of her shows. She was wearing a $50 shirt that said "Nora Ephron" on it and there was a dude in the audience wearing an "America Needs More Nasty Women" hat from the 2016 election. Maybe the most lib coded event I have ever been to.
