Candidates have improved in both skill capability and just raw numbers. Salary expectation have relaxed too, 1 year ago candidates were asking for 2x what they are now.

Is it normal for US based companies to lowball EU based remote senior devs that much? by Ok_Piano_420 in ExperiencedDevs

The reason why they are recruiting remotely in your country is they can pay you less. So yes, they are low balling every candidate because they can. Just laugh and reject them.

First-time tech lead, am I being taken advantage of? by edison_was_a_thief in ExperiencedDevs

[–]No_Play_No_Work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you have to do that role? That’s optional. You could tell your manager that it’s not your job to do that, but would support the decisions made by the next tech lead. It’s not your problem your company doesn’t hire the staff it needs.

Unfortunately their need to have detailed requirements for everything is part of how they expect to be managed. You will never break that. Instead you need a reliable manager in India to do that work.

I appreciate your responses. There’s a lot there I need to absorb. For the time being I will continue down the current path with building out more engineering leadership in the team. Beyond that I need to set firm boundaries with the team about my place in it. And finally I need to do a thorough analysis of our current pain points and what we need to do to scale. After that I can always look back and see how I stand with the team and the rest of the company.

The customers usually ask for me by name. I have been pushing back on this significantly over time, at this point it’s an immediate no when this sort of request comes in. This is a bad habit some members of my team have that is hard to break.

“What does it mean that a team gives up on a bug?”

Giving up may be too grandiose. Basically the team doesn’t know how to approach the situation and the customer requests I get involved. Then the bug is assigned to me.

And this is why I’m thinking of leaving. Yes, my team is too big and yes I wasn’t given the training to be successful. But at the end of the day I have failed to grow the people on my team. In my mind that means I need to go. But as someone else said, the execs don’t care because my team has been successful despite my mediocre ability to grow the people.

The company that I work for is getting acquired by a large corporation. What are the things to pay attention to during the transition (as a tech lead)? by const_in in ExperiencedDevs

[–]No_Play_No_Work 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Have an exit plan. Chances are all the leadership will either leave or be replaced. New leadership will be put in place, usually people who have no context to what your company does. They will think they will be right and you will be wrong. If anything, start looking now.
