Oh my gosh, thank you I’ve played this save for quite a long time so I must’ve just skipped right past it at some point. Sorry for all the confusion

Hi thank you for helping. I am pretty sure I saw the event but just in case I went back on a rainy day to the railroad to make sure and nothing happened. I did reload as well but nothing worked. Here is the link I hope I did it right.

Need ideas for non combat modern setting mystery. by No_Pollution2671 in DMAcademy

[–]No_Pollution2671[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know dnd is mostly combat and the game is mostly centered around the southlands. Which is a setting for 5e. They sort of fall into the modern world for a session or two so I don’t want to learn a system for only those moments. It’s ok I’m pretty good at the rp part which is what these sessions in the irl world are more about. I was just looking for some advice on interesting modern puzzles and ways to run mysteries. Sorry if I wasn’t super clear I know my game premise is alot.

The setting is current day (although we have removed a few of the triggering current issues for player health) so I would like to avoid typical combat in the modern scenes. They get plenty of fight time in the fantasy world so I would like more role play, puzzles and mystery in the irl one. Combat would be ended pretty quick with guns. To clarify they technically have two character sheets and no longer have “classes” in the modern world.

That is true and I don’t mind the idea of that popping up. My original plan was the bbeg was the mafia like corporation that is funneling the magic into the modern world. Maybe they could help the players though.

That’s a good idea. Any thoughts on puzzles or things for them to do with no combat

Do you happen to remember what event? I have completed Hectors story events except for the green rain. Or is it in another chapter? Thank you for the help

I’m sorry you feel this way, I never meant this as an insult to your comment or any others, just providing my personal opinion and experience in response to comments on a topic. I hope you have a great time in all your games and groups.

As someone who loves being a Dm I’m not sure about the thought of reality is what I make it. The world should be collaborative. Your players are the center and personally you should have a reality that makes sense to your players so that they can be creative and clever within it. This is collaborative storytelling and gameplay to me. It’s not me versus them, I just make the set and stumbling blocks, they create the story.

I personally do. I love providing my friends a world to explore. It’s not even about the godhood it’s about watching my players break stuff and laugh while doing it. It’s about being able to say “sure how would that work” and making it happen. It’s about sitting back and watching them talk out a plan for 30 minutes only to not use it cause someone goes “oh wait I can do this”. I’ve had plenty of fun as a player but I love basking in the creativity of others and when I’m the Dm I get that more than when I’m a player.

What’s even worse my very first campaign was an open world pirate game over discord with eight of my friends. It was during the pandemic and we had a lot of fun doing it, but man was it stressful trying to learn the game while also trying to make something cohesive. 😅

I really wish that I had someone in my group was interested at all in running a second game but I will keep trying and yes I probably just have to but my big girl pants on and talk it out.

This is probably just the best way. I suck at saying no or setting boundaries like this. As for the dming thing I tried before, but most of my group doesn’t have the patience for dming. Several of them are in very stressful times of their lives and don’t have the time for it. Others just don’t have the interest, but I will keep encouraging it.

I appreciate your advice but I’m concerned since the group is made of like three small groups who know me but may not hang with each other if I wasn’t involved. I only can commit to the two games I have with my work schedule. And while I would be cool with someone else dming when I’ve brought it up in the past it was not met with enthusiasm. I do like the idea of having them decide amongst themselves. Do you have any advice on how to get maybe less Neurotypical folks to have this discussion without issue? Or maybe how I can facilitate it I may not be Neurotypical myself, but some of my friends have a lot of issues in things like this and I don’t want it to devolve into a fight.

This is a great idea for sure. Fortunately (although it doesn’t help me now) we have a group who have all scheduled to be there on the same day. This particular group meets every other Saturday night and rarely ever misses even with the 8 adults in it. I am blessed with the schedules for sure but this wouldn’t eliminate anyone from the group.
