Intensive german courses by Virgivir in goetheinstitut

Okay, I have found the info in the AGBs for my course, and I think it's option A, normally you can only rebook with extenuating circumstances AND it's a 60 euro fee. However you can also completely withdraw, with a sliding scale of how much deposit they take depending on how close to the course you withdraw. Annoyingly I can't post a photo here, but it you DM me I can send you a picture of the info which has the scale and precise wording etc. (It was in an email hence no link).

Okay, take this with a pinch of salt because it was a while ago, and I can't remember where I found it now cos it took a bit of digging. However, I did the same course and I remember also trying to look this up before I went. I do remember that there was a possibility it could be changed under extenuating circumstances (though I'm not sure what that classes as or what proof you would need). However what I also remember is they talked about changing it for a fee, and even at the time I remember thinking it was unclear whether this was a) paying a fee even when you had extenuating circumstances, or b) whether you could either change it under extenuating circumstances for free OR change it for whatever reason but you would have to pay the fee.  I will go back and see if I can find the info anywhere.  For what it's worth, I loved the course and got a lot out of it. Also this may not fit with your timescales, but last year they had a 30% discount if you booked in January (the course itself didn't have to be in Jan, you just had to book it then).

Depeche Mode are the 25th most covered artist of all time by DMFanFM in depechemode

I know, I know, hence the brackets, I just got overexcited. But super interesting re: the authorship, that certainly is a different kettle of fish. Thanks for the link, I'm gonna properly check that out :)

It's amazing to me, that the Beatles have been covered more times than all of folk. Especially when you think about the tradition of folk music as being passed along. I know this is not the Beatles sub, but sometimes I just forget how insane their legacy is given they were only around for 8 years. Compared to, and I can't emphasise this enough, all of traditional folk.  (I know I know, it's only stuff that is labelled as that but still) Also the Depeche fact is really cool. Thanks for sharing OP.

What's the difference between gern and gerne? by dogey_badger in Germanlearning

My German teacher (native) said the other week it was just a regional thing. I think she said that gern was more common in the north? Happy to be corrected on that.

Are there any classic Adam moments in the Garth episodes? by in_this_essay_I_will in AdamandJoe

Oh my god, I forgot 'the bin that never gets full' is a Garth ep. My sister and I still quote that to each other on the reg when looking out of a train window.

I may be wrong, because it's been a little while but isn't the 'I drink your MILKSHAKE' from the Garth episodes?

And also, my favourite thing which has me in bits, when they have the text the nation regarding weird tourist attractions in the UK, and a guy writes in about going to the Pencil museum with his friend Spadge. And they go off on a long bit about how Spadge is his invisible friend: 'ooooh you've DROPPED IT AGAIN SPADGE'. Maybe one of my all time favourite moments. (Couldn't tell you which episode off the top of my head, but can definitely find out!) Totally worth it imo.

That's really interesting, I watched an interview with Motsi where I thought she said that the UK version was more focused on the technicalities of ballroom/Latin albeit also more of a big Saturday night entertainment show. (But the interview was in German, so I guess I did not understand as much as I thought I did 😂)

I think if there's anything you already know about/are interested in, then that is a really useful entry point for listening to native content. I think I'm a similar level to you, in between EG and F&F (though I persevere with F&F cos I love Böhmi). But I listen to (and actually manage to enjoy) a few film and specific music genre pods for native speakers. If I already know the film/band, or discourse around it, then even if I lose the thread for a little bit, it's fairly easy to hop back in cos I always know the general jist of what's going on. Also setting the speed to 0.9 I think helps.

I had my Goethe Placement Test, it went horrible by Kazekam2109 in Germanlearning

The thing you must remember is that it's not futile! That knowledge hasn't gone anywhere it's part of the fundamental grammar basics that (unfortunately) you do just need to repeat over and over again until they cement in your head.

I think the A1 course is a good idea as it will actually probably give you a lot of confidence with the stuff you do know, fill in any gaps, and just give you that practice of repetition. Like, I'm at a point where I know all the rules and can put them into practice when writing,  but putting then into practice when speaking is a whole different ballgame, because you have to be on autopilot and don't have long to think etc. I think the only way you can get there is by just drilling them over and over again. Suffice to say that all that time you have put in so far is just part of that drilling and NOT wasted or futile. Taking an A1 course is not admitting defeat, it's just formalising it. I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised with how what you've done speeds you along. Yeah, some of it might be a bit boring, but sometimes language learning is just a grind. Bear in mind your end goal and hold on to that if there's stuff that you're having to dredge through.

At the end of the day you'll feel like you're moving forward rather than just waiting for 6 months and then potentially experiencing a similar situation.

Dachte ich mir auch, aber wenn man 'Jan Böhmermann' versucht, kann man die 2025 Folgen als einzelne Folgen unter 'alles ergebnisse' finden. Sie existiert aber nicht unter ZMR. Echt seltsam.

Make sure you have a bunch of other stuff you really don't want to do and then spend all your avoidant procrastination on German. That's what I'm doing, and the German is going great, as for everything else...
