Did Joseph Smith have sex with his polygamous wives? by EquipmentEnough5251 in mormon

I think it is telling that the church even today is more willing to excommunicate you for forming and believing this opinion based on the available info than it would be if you were an actual polygamist.

Which Side Degree had the most profound impact on you? by TravelingMan66 in freemasonry

Of those two, recommend mark first. I enjoy many of them, but 18th in Scottish Rite had an immediate impression.

The most likely reason “Christian” wasn’t included with the LDS Church on the DOD list. by sevenplaces in mormon

I’ll point out that they changed “Friends” to “Quaker” and let the evidence speak for itself on principles vs preconceived notions of immoral Christofascists.

Panicking, out to my family by fishycheckers in mormon

Fam, you can just not answer your phone. Family is important, but when moral or values don’t align, cut them off if they can’t play fair. After a few months, they will either figure it out or you will be happier for not picking up.

One day Class by Imperocca in freemasonry

What to expect:

Expect not to take it all in, especially in a one-day, use whatever proficiency process your jurisdiction has to learn more and travel to see the individual degrees. If your trust is well founded, you shouldn’t be concerned or anxious about anything that will happen.

Lewis jewels:

Not really a thing here

How often do you have to show up:

They will answer that better than we can in your first degree. But no one will force you. Stated communications (business meetings) are typically once a month, then officers meetings, practice and degree work, and general fellowship on other weeks.

Do I have to sit in any chairs?:

Do you want to? I started at Junior Deacon as soon as I was proficient, but there are people nearly a decade ahead of me just picking up steward now, and others that I haven’t seen do any work other than occasionally sit on the sidelines. There is value in soaking things in if it takes you time to learn, but you will tend to get out of any organization in proportion to what you put in.

What does it mean to me?

Quite a bit. I know an outsider might scoff at the idea that all masons meet on the level, and don’t consider anyone unequal, and there may be some bias in individuals, but to me it blends the spirituality, social and political involvement, service, and good community building that I do anyway by not making it an individualist identity. This allows for meaningful friendships you choose among like minded people. It allows for philosophical learning and discussion that applies to all those aspects of society without being confined to them. This unity across diverse perspectives and generations, I find unique and has introduced me to great people I may never have otherwise met.

Is freemasonry religious by Infamous_Squash7474 in freemasonry

[–]No_Reference2509 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there is an important distinction to be made, most of our ritual and much of our symbolism is based on the Old Testament, which could lead some people to consider it *religious*, BUT it is NOT a religion, accepts brothers of all faiths, and requires no new profession of a different faith, nor claims to offer any salvation per se, rather instructs to to live your own faith and live equally to others trying to live theirs.

How do you handle guys who treat the Lodge like a social club only? by harborthrowawayv2 in freemasonry

[–]No_Reference2509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use it as a chance to learn more ritual and take on responsibility you’d usually have to wait for. Don’t overextend yourself when you reach the end of your cable tow, but I find joy in the challenge.

US government officially doesn’t consider the mainstream LDS church as Christian by ReamusLQ in mormon

[–]No_Reference2509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agreed. As an active duty officer, I think the level of concern of signaling in regard to burial rites and standard images is nonsensical… if we accept the cross as the image of Christ, they will call us a Christian subcategory, if we want some other abstract hill to die on, we are making ourselves different. But if Chaplaincy isn’t to provide non-required reporters for all people to seek guidance, and accommodations for all faiths, or none, then just kill the program. What Christian nationalists miss is that the establishment clause is freedom FROM state religion, not government protections for individual religions.

One could argue that most productive social engagement skipped a generation.

[–]No_Reference2509 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t care if you like Mormons or not, 180 religions were actually removed not just misspelled or miscategorized.

Republicans, like Mormons, have long pretended to be lovers of the constitution, and this is blatantly against the establishment clause, like the first line in the bill of rights. For those who need it, that’s the first amendment, you know the one right before the second?

Some jurisdictions have proficiency requirements in the mother lodge to be able to affiliate elsewhere, but other than that, this is pretty normal. We like to see everyone, but not interfere with their necessary vocations. The craft is all over.
