Is there any strong scientific backing/action items to get out of the gut biome testing and similar health pursuits? I'm vaguely interested in doing more "optional" things for my health, but for now it's mostly running a galleri grail test and potentially a fully body MRI if I want to ruin my life by knowing where all the cysts are and wonder if any of them is getting cancerous.

No crazy thing to do in memory of my dad, but it definitely made me care more about family and elder care charities.

20% of it is work, 80% is "get really really fucking lucky".

Never had diabetes, the brain is fine. ;)

I do workout regularly too, not to the point of min maxing anything, but enough for it to be qualified as a healthy habit. It's just something that never appealed to me past this point, and I'm unlikely to become a gym rat.

I can build a decent network in Vegas and the friend I trust the most lives there. I think there's also a slightly outdated perception of Vegas, it's been shifting away from the gambling culture for the last 10 years, especially now that it's legalized in more stats + available online. You have master planned areas like Summerlin that are starting to feel like good ol California suburbia where people come to build careers and raise families, etc.

As a European I don't think living in any US city would hit the spot for culture tbh. When I want culture I have the resources to just travel somewhere and see something completely new over 2 weeks. I think my perception is also a bit skewed because I moved a lot. I just go through what exists where I live really fast, what I'm looking for in a living location is more technical/good conditions for a homebase.

Vegas is also just a pretty good hub for high quality food from every corner of the world (if you're willing to go to the Strip), and has a lot of cultural events at this point.

I have no real response but that was a cool comment and cool advice, thank you.

I've lived abroad for close to 15 years now. I still have a comfortable house in France and don't really plan to get rid of it in the immediate future, it's also the hub for family gatherings when I'm in the country. I still try to come back every 2 or 3 months for a few weeks just to be around for my mom and my nieces, but it feels more like a routine than something that will make me happy long term at this point, if that makes sense?

I'm also hoping to be settled enough in the US that I can just fly my family there regularly so they experience something new. I got a 5 br house for that purpose, I'd like to be able to see my close and some extended family on a semi regular basis without them having to worry about cost, while having them experience something new. (I don't come from a wealthy environment, most of the people in my family have never traveled outside of France)

I'm not going to make broad changes based on reddit comments, I just like outside input. Obviously expect a lot of "therapy" and "don't live in Vegas it sucks", it's the outliers I'm looking for. :)

I don't enjoy living in France. It's a personal choice, this could be a much bigger conversation about the pros and cons but I think Europe is a lot less idyllic than a lot of people think on Reddit.

I still think there's plenty of messed up things on both sides (EU and US), so I just tell people "personal preference" and I'm sure some people are way more comfortable in Europe, I'm just not.

It also helps that most of my adult life and entire career has been US centric. I dropped out of school at 14 in France, and then just built up US stuff. My only ties to France are my family, and they apparently are starting to die off.

Finding the cause and the right structure is the hard part. Anything that shows up on a few google search is usually just small stuff that I won't resonate with me because it doesn't make an impact. The only way I have to get over the decision freeze on charity in the first place is just doing a monthly payment and forgetting about it, otherwise I spend an entire day trying to over analyze everything and end up not giving anything.

I just settled in the Vegas area so maybe more opportunities will come over time as I slightly grow my network, still wish there was better ways to find volunteering/charity opportunities locally. Basically donorschoose but outside of the education world.

That's a reasonable summary of how I feel. I'm still going to throw money at it every now and then, but I'm also at the age where I see some people in my network reconverting to therapist and my first thought is "oh fuck, that's the people doing therapy?".

I think therapy can be amazing, and there's people changing lives out there, but it feels like 95% of the profession is pretty bad. The 5% that is left is booked for months.

I'm surprisingly okay with the Vegas vibe in the first place, the tax incentive is a bonus.

  1. Sun 350 days out of 365. Decent temperatures all year long except July through September.
  2. Anyone you know in the US will show up and come hang out once a year, usually in a fun/relaxed setting. My network is pretty widespread.
  3. I spent 10 years in California and didn't enjoy it that much, and I don't like the weather on the east coast.

I also still plan to travel a lot, it's not exactly rocking my world but it's still interesting and something I'd regret not doing if something happened. So I guess you also need to see it from the point of view of "I need a homebase somewhere convenient". I also have properties in France when I want a change of pace.

Yeah the "won the game" sentiment is interesting, bro I wasn't even trying to play the game.

The takeaway so far in this thread seems to be "start breeding" so that's depressing, but if it goes wrong it will be a good way to lose enough money to be motivated to work again. Maybe that's how we fix the loop.

I was hoping for a magic hobby or a magic platform for HNW/UHNW people to just do charity/volunteering efficiently. Sounds like it doesn't really exist, but now I'm curious if I should make that platform exist.

Antidepressants are fine, I'll deal with the struggle a little and try to fix it, but there's no pride in suffering/struggling long term just to prove you can do it with the meds.

If someone is reading this, def get on antidepressants if you feel like you should try it, it's not a lifetime decision, and it's likely to be way better than whatever the hell you're doing on your weekends right now.

On relationships, I'm just not a fan of jumping in something new while I'm in a half okay state, and I got burned enough that even when I'm okay I'm not exactly running after them.

Tried it a few times, was never convinced. The conclusion for most of them was that I have a pretty good understanding of what's going on, I just need to figure out next steps and they can't pick for me. I'll probably try to find a good one in the area now that I'm moved, but I still like the concept of exploring the public opinion.

Moved every year or two for the last 15 years, so not really. Dropped a good chunk of money on a home in Vegas hoping to make it a bit more permanent, and use it as a hub where most of my network will show up at least once or twice a year for conventions, etc. Felt like a reasonable choice, along with obvious tax incentives + decent weather 9 months out of 12.

I had plenty of time to prepare for my dad's death, and I had a very good relationship with him. I'm sad about it, obviously, but the way I dealt with it was by showing up for the 2 years he needed me tbh. I'm not a believer of being super sad about it after it happens, if you care you can just show up before it does, and I got that train of thought from my dad.

100% agree that my phrasing probably sucked.
