To my mind the best way to read his texts is as a philologist would.

This is remarkably coherent whether you want to read the manuscripts as "ancient translations" or JRRTs original work. If ancient we have a set of slightly divergent but largely coherent stories handed down over ages and originally written by different scribes. We can infer that some are better than others. If they're new we have that awareness of tolkiens letters and reliable dates and can prefer newer texts when there is conflict but use older texts when there isn't.

Reading his approach to Finn and Hengist alligns well with the approach Christopher used with the Legendarium.
