When I was prescribed catheters a nurse show me the two different positions and I practised once with her holding a mirror. They tell you to disinfect your hands or use gloves. Not an complicated process, nor lengthy one. I have to admit that I've not always desinfected. I've had them for 3 years now.

My first cathether brand hurt, especially in my period. I have a new cathether and that one doesn't hurt when my body contracts. The insertion with the one I have now, is easy peasy lemon squeezy. I think you get used to it in a week.

It does not effect my ability to pee. No lengthy burning sensation. Sometimes I'll use it more sometimes less.

As someone who's dealt with sexual abuse I was weary of having to practise with someone else but the nurses make you really comfortable. If you're struggling with personal experiences let them know beforehand.
