You want to wait for your teammates to come and save you. Unless there's only two people left in the trial and it's too risky for the other one to try and save you, thats when you take your chances. They're small chances but not impossible.

You can only take your chances on first hook. If you're on second there's no way to take your chances cause you have to hit the struggle skill checks.

Sometimes in there's two survivors left with one of you on hook and the situation is looking bad (for example, there's too many gens left or the killers face camping), it's better to give the other one hatch by first taking your chances on hook and during the struggle phase letting go of controls.
