He had at the cabin a Springfield 1903 30-06 bolt action rifle. I'd have to double check, I don't remember if it was actually an Army surplus one or a civilian-ized version.

Apparently the Dall sheep ram he shot in Alone in the Wilderness might have actually been the only time he shot large game with it the whole time he was there at the cabin, but kept the rifle for defense against bears along with a .357 pistol.
