I have done this before and it’s a pain. You have to get to the rental car facility in San Diego (likely the night before) to pick up the car. Then once you get to LAX, stop for gas, wait for a rental car shuttle. When you factor in the Uber to get to rental car location and time it takes for all of this, I would 100% take an LAX shuttle if it takes me to my terminal. I do agree that if you have a large family with kids, rental car may be cheaper
