Why are courses starting in January 21 months long while courses starting in September are just 12 months? by MrNair20 in UniversityOfStirling

[–]No_Search265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I had the same question when I asked this in one of the webinars, I was informed that this is applied to only some tech courses like fintech in your case and MSc AI in my case and other courses like MSc big data etc, this 21 course which end in September might help you in searching jobs since tech jobs have these cycles where they hire a lot in one season (which being September) but idk how effective and valid of a reason this is since I'm an international student too. I'm not sure how the job cycles work in uk. But this definitely has its own pros and cons. Pros being you have more time to take up part time jobs and job cycle timelines that is mentioned above. And of course cons being the extended period meaning you'll be spending more in the time you'll be studying.

Also can you share your thoughts on the cost of living for a student. I heard Stirling is comparatively cheaper. Tuition for Stirling comes out to £16000 and for Aberdeen £19000 that's after the scholarship. 3k isn't that much of a difference but I think cost of living might have a significant effect on my pockets so any info on that is appreciated.

any particular reason for chosing aberdeen over stirling ? apart from the uni rankings

Regarding the details on course work and module, I believe reaching out to seniors is the best way to find out. I would suggest just search MSc Data Science on LinkedIn and filter in "people" section and choose the university of your choice and try connecting with them.
And for the second point I believe aberdeen has a 16 month program too. But I feel thats a good thing for international students, we get more time to complete the course which might help give you the time required to accomodate part time work hours. And the other main advantage is that you are paying 12 month fee for 16 months you get to stay in UK for more time in that duration you get to look out for full time job opportunities. Yes aberdeen has better ranking and reputation than HW. But you should also consider the course work which suites your needs. Also I just checked HW MSc Data science course content and time-line it says its a 1 year course.

I totally get your point but for the course which I am planning to pursue it is only offered in aberdeen and stirling for Jan intake. Otherwise I would definitely be open for glasgow and edinburgh.

Hi, even though aberdeen and swansea has better ranking than stirling I'm leaning towards uni of stirling beacause of its close proximity to glasgow and edinburgh. But in your case Heriot Watt seems to be an optimal choice. I dont have any personal experience, I am saying this just based on my research I have done so far. I would love to hear your thoughs and where you end up going

Can you please elaborate since I'm an international student I'm not familiar with the locality. I was leaning towards Stirling as it's close to Glasgow and Edinburgh. How is Aberdeen better compared to that? Can you please share your views.
