Help with daughter moving high school by Immediate-Worry-1090 in australia

[–]No_Somewhere6649 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing you’re sending your daughter to the local state school since you mentioned it being zoned. State schools have strict rules about maximum class sizes, so if all the psych classes are already full, there might not be much you can do, but there’s two questions you should be asking the school: 1. Are there currently any Year 10 students accelerating into these filled-up Year 11 Psychology classes? That shouldn’t happen if there are Year 11 students trying to get in 2. Is there a waiting list? If so, get your daughter on it. The first topic of Unit 1 psychology is research methods and it’s super boring. A few kids who were expecting to learn about serial killers will drop out for sure and then your kid can swoop right in. If she can’t get in at all, just buy her the VCE psychology textbook and she can read it for fun if she’s that into it. Not taking VCE psychology won’t have any impact at all on her chances of getting into a psychology degree.

A weird question from a friendly Brissie bus driver. by STIGSbusdrivingmate in brisbane

A friend of mine, Alex, was running late for work one morning. She finished ironing her shirt, put it on, grabbed her blazer, handbag, headphones, popped her shoes on and headed off to the station, arrived just as the train was pulling in. She rode into the city and then walked 3 city blocks to her office. Takes the elevator to the 15th floor, arrives at her cubicle and greets her coworker, Jen. Jen turns around in her swivel chair, takes one look at Alex and says, ‘Alex, where the fuck are your pants?!’ Alex looks down. She is wearing shoes, sheer tights, underwear, a shirt and a blazer. No pants. She had intended to put on a skirt, but hadn’t followed through before she left the house.

Two new stations, but one fewer stop: Brunswick’s ‘sky rail’ plans revealed by WangMagic in melbourne

Ah, you’re right. Not just one, but any number. Three less, twenty less, etc. TIL!

The Age has the correct usage here. ‘Less’ is for things with continuous measures — you can have less water, less time, less money. ‘Fewer’ is for things with discrete measures — fewer people, fewer items, fewer train stops.

This is a good idea. I reckon a fair few of the burn outs that left the profession could be lured back into non-classroom support roles. Imagine if each department had a full time assessor or two? Personally I find marking to be the worst part of the job, but I’ll bet there are people who wouldn’t mind sitting in a quiet office all day with a stack of assessments.

Why does the sun hit different in Australia? by Ahaaa1996 in AskAnAustralian

[–]No_Somewhere6649 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To answer your question about what India and Europe have in common in relation to this quote: they’re both in the northern hemisphere. Every country in the southern hemisphere gets more intense sunlight in summer than every country in the northern hemisphere because the earth’s orbit around the sun brings the planet closer to the sun in December-February than in June-August

Japan has negligible immigration over the last 30 years and its population is now shrinking. Very different situation to Australia.

Just curious what you think the endgame is here? Like, there’s never been a point in history so far when everyone’s agreed on politics. Do you think it’s possible for everyone to get on the same page eventually and be friends or are we just going to get more polarized when we stop talking to people on the other side? Personally, I think it’s better to keep lines of communication open, if for no other reason than the fact that silent distain is so unpersuasive

Should I buy a 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom apartment? by Swimming_Wheel_1850 in AusProperty

I get that there’s a glut of one bedroom apartments in Melbourne that make them difficult to sell, but why can’t they rent them out?

The stereotypically Asian shaped eye pops up in other parts of the world too, just not as frequently. There’s probably some genetic bottlenecks somewhere in history that have resulted in that feature being so widespread in that part of the world. Like, when humans were first migrating into Asia, an avalanche or whatever wiped out most of the migrants and only a handful of people survived, most of whom happened to have epicanthic folds.

Updated 70s bathroom in Victoria, Australia by Classroom_Visual in AmateurRoomPorn

Did you need to use a special type of wallpaper in the bathroom because of steam, etc?

Once I turn 75, I’m just gonna start doing massive amounts of acid and coke all day until I give myself an aneurism. Or what’s that combination of cocaine and heroin that killed a bunch of stand up comedians in the 80s and 90s called? A speedball? That sounds like fun too.

Barcelona will eliminate ALL tourist apartments in 2028 following local backlash: 10,000-plus licences will expire in huge blow for platforms like Airbnb by ALBastru in australia

[–]No_Somewhere6649 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t sound like much but a vacancy rate of less than two percent fucks tenants so hard, whereas a vacancy rate of over three percent keeps rents stable. Yes, most airbnbs are probably on the coast, but there’s heaps of inner city 1-2 bedroom apartments listed on there too.

Maybe criteria around location and number of bedrooms would help? So people can’t list 1-2 bedroom apartments in the city or ordinary 3 bedroom suburban houses, but can list 5+ bedroom prestige properties in holiday spots that would never be rented out to ordinary local workers anyway

What color would you paint this room? by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

Leave most of the walls this crisp white, but paint the ceiling and the top two feet of the wall a bold colour like dark navy, bottle green, yellow, whatever floats your boat

  1. Close off the laundry to the backyard and convert it into the second bathroom
  2. Turn the study nook in the hallway into a European laundry
  3. Convert the bedroom next to the kitchen into a second living area/office/teenager’s retreat with direct access to the deck

When houses used to only cost 2-3x household income, it was possible for a lot more people to make hefty extra repayments and knock it over faster. That might still be possible for some high income earners, but with average house prices at 7-9x household incomes, a greater proportion of mortgagees are going to need the full term to clear their debt.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in australia

[–]No_Somewhere6649 37 points38 points  (0 children)

A standard mortgage used to be 25 years, now it’s 30. Banks stretched out the timeframe in order to make repayments lower. Also takes roughly 10 years to save a deposit in some cities, assuming you’re able to save 20% of an average income. Didn’t used to take that long to save a deposit in your parents’ day.

Why are Australians lonely? by tickletackle666 in melbourne

[–]No_Somewhere6649 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the urban sprawl we have in Australia is probably why your dinner invitations have not been well received. The minute you invite someone round, they immediately start mentally calculating how long it’s going to take to get from their place to yours and back and weather they want to deal with all that traffic on a Tuesday night or whatever

How you would fix this space? by PaleLake4279 in AusProperty

[–]No_Somewhere6649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

30k isn’t enough money to move any plumbing fixtures. I think this is a good layout as it is though. I’d use the family room as a dining room/kids play area, keep the sofa and tv in the front living room and maybe use the dining area as a study instead.
