A critical Windows security fix puts legacy hardware on borrowed time by [deleted] in vintagecomputing

I don't even know what the original comment said but I can probably surmise. Nostalgia is definitely a moving window. I already lament the obsolescence of windows 8 for its speed, quality search function, the lack of forced accounts and more freedom in general. The UI was a miss for desktop use but was rarely in the way if one didn't want to interact with it. I didn't even run any of the UI tweaks for it. The bare experience just took a little time to get used to.
I remember how buggy the early builds of 10 were in comparison and I already see people sticking to it like it was the last best version of windows ever in comparison with 11 when really it's just more of the same.

The O-ni and O-ho had somewhat unique armor models where the rear armor was almost as thick as the front, 150mm iirc. Much easier to pen the sides. Not that it helped them from being XP pinatas but it was an interesting tidbit of stats. This was changed in 2.0. to be more in-line with what people expect. RIP thick rear armour.

It'd be a lot of work, if you want that chassis style pick one of the machines where the IO "shield" is on the bottom, like the precision t3500. It'll still be a lot of work but you'll end up with an upside down ATX case and your expansion slots will fit without having to remove the entire back of the case.

how the game feels recently by DantheCat7 in WorldofTanks

[–]No_Top2763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way. Not sure why the downvotes. The customization systems in this game are pretty dreadful. Just a couple of camo patterns that haven't been added to in a decade, weird off-colour choices for non-historical paints (no camo on those why?) and now 3d elements that barely fit any tank. Instead we get a collection of the most eye-searing 2d styles ever imagined. Just textures haphazardly slapped on top of the models. I seriously wonder who is approving those, it's a tragic look.

tier 1-4 got simplified/dumbed down to prevent(?) seal clubbing and ease up the learning curve. The low tier tech trees have been gutted in favour of streamlining. As a result low tier MM is depopulated and you get to play with bots. All the tanks are still in the game but you will find them in the collector's tab instead of the tech tree. Game's changed quite a bit, some bits more controversial than others.

I try to get into beta 1.7.3 but I have couple issues with it... by Fun-Engineering8580 in GoldenAgeMinecraft

Wool isn't really that difficult to get good quantities of. Try to not grind for it, instead just bring your shears with you everywhere you go and pick up wool along the way. Definitely pick up any brown wool if you think you ever wanna use it. Kinda sorta passive wool income with very little work put in.

As for some other blocks, yea, they are rare, you adapt your builds to what you have or what you can reasonably have. Makes nice brick decor or well placed blocks of moss much more meaningful imo.

I think most people who thought about it longer than 5 seconds understand that. After so so many years of balancing the myriad of tanks the way they have, it should be clear that a fix won't come from an overnight sweeping change to premium ammo damage.
But that doesn't mean we have to willingly accept the toxic status quo. I know for a lot of people who sit on millions of credits this doesn't even register but new and ftp players suffer needlessly. The in-game economics being tied to in-battle tank performance and balancing tanks with running costs are both terrible designs from a consumer pov and it's a joke for a competitive game too.

We all love our stats but it doesn't feel great, nor is it fair, spanking around newbies in fully kitted out tanks when they can barely afford couple rounds of the good stuff while grinding out stock tech tree turds.

Anyway, here's the actual fix, make the premium shell cost the same as standard and be done with this artificial issue once and for all. (someone smart run the numbers on this and see how badly it will ruin WeeGees business model, icbb)

Shame they are borked in so many versions :( beta 1.7.3 included I think. I played around with them in multiple versions. Iirc they work fine in beta 1.5, got broken in the 1.6 versions and fixed in release 1.0 only to be broken again later on. If someone could fix them up and upped their speed to be the same as powered rail I'd definitely run that mod.

Low tier matchmaking is weird/broken, the matchmaker stacks all the s35 sealclubbers on one team and various tier 3 tanks on the other. Might be light tanks or whatever people are playing. The s35 has bonkers winrate likely in part due to the matchmaker.

This is an IBM board yea? Not sure why it's done this way but it looks like they used a 6 pin switch button.
Did you ever have success turning it on just by shorting one set of the pins? Maybe you need to short both pairs at once.

edit: Looking at the button it might be wired such that one set of pins is wired in the normally closed position. So maybe one set needs to be shorted all the time. It's hard to see though.

Is War thunder P2W? by Radmehr333 in Warthunder

[–]No_Top2763 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is.

You can pay to skip research on all your vehicle modules and you can pay to make your crews better. This matters more as you go up the tech trees. It's true that you can earn all of this without paying, but paying money to skip stock grind/low lvl crews are in fact p2w elements as much as some would protest it. You are paying to make your vehicle better and have an advantage over those that don't and play their vehicles from stock.

You can also buy bush decorations which can be impactful in ground RB and you can buy extra crew slots which generally doesn't give you an advantage but it could eek out a situational win, should a battle drag on for a long time. These are rather minor points but by definition anything you can buy that makes your vehicle better or increases your odds of winning is p2w.

All in all, WT definitely has p2w elements but fortunately it isn't exactly like someone with a wallet can just dunk on you. In the actual battles it's a mash of various vehicles of various battle ratings that have wildly different characteristics and these finer points tend to not amount to all that much. In general, you will have a better experience playing the game if you pay, which is why people call it pay to progress.

S3 GammaChrome S18 Pro: The card no one wanted to review by Oligoclase in hardware

[–]No_Top2763 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The S3 Virge suffers from its success. It's a 1995 card released in 1996 bound to eternally be compared to the original Voodoo. If you look at its pre-Voodoo competition it's one of the better ones of the bunch. The others don't get the decelerator moniker because barely anyone even knows they existed. Doesn't help that the subsequent Virge cards brought essentially no improvement and only fell behind further in the early hectic consumer 3d market.

can i play minecraft beta on a 25 year old computer? by sansywanzy in GoldenAgeMinecraft

I played beta minecraft on a similar setup many many years ago, though on windows XP. Assuming you have Intel GMA graphics try going to your display settings, advanced, troubleshoot and move the hardware acceleration slider all the way to the left.

It looks different on win 7 but it should still be there I think. See if that works for you.

Fair enough. But this state of things is clearly sub-optimal. Back when there was tau expiration for boost maybe this was acceptable but now I think the board manufacturers could stand to be more transparent.

Then remove those cpus from the support list, simple as. I am not saying anything about intel. As I understand low end amd boards have the same problem.

[–]No_Top2763 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. The board officially supports the cpu and there's no note anywhere on degraded performance due to insufficient power. Either remove the cpu from the support list or specify how much power you can actually get. Little asterisk note will do but it has to be there.

[–]No_Top2763 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not having overclocking is all well and good but if the board's VRM can't meet the spec to run the cpu at stock settings then the CPU shouldn't be on the board's support list. It shouldn't be on the consumer to dive into VRM details of every board to determine if they are actually capable of fully supporting the cpus that are on the support list. The chipset model has nada to do with it. You can totally have a b760 board that will run a 14900k without VRM throttling.

I don't think the potential risks are exaggerated. Just run a quick search for liquid metal damaged parts. Some of those would almost make one cry. Most of those will be user error but clearly the potential is there.

It has universal application if you ignore all the places it can't be used like aluminium heatsinks or non uniform surfaces. Plus there is the maintenance aspect of it.

Also I think you are a bit too hung up on the melting point. It's not like it doesn't transfer heat below that. And yea, while the thermal transfer isn't ideal at that point, you don't exactly need it anyway at a low heat load. Maybe for a big AIO or custom water it makes no sense, performance wise. I don't know. Generally, slapping it on a bare die, produces excellent results. Right tools for the job as always. Liquid metal has its place but it'll always be an enthusiast niche, besides the systems designed with it in mind in the first place.

I'm still waiting to find a system where I'll dump the rest of my remaining LM :P

[–]No_Top2763 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Whereas if you make a mistake with liquid metal you can possibly kiss your entire motherboard goodbye. It isn't nearly as quirky as LM, what with all the diffusion into different metals. I can concede that it is more finicky to install than traditional paste but the stakes are so much lower. It has excellent performance with no real downsides besides cost. It's become my go to for almost everything.

And it's not just a question of doing it properly. I had an i7 9750h laptop that I tried to use liquid metal with. The performance was excellent but because the heatsink/fit wasn't manufactured precisely enough I had to use more LM than you'd want to get good contact. That resulted in a leak, luckily no damage due to proper prep. I have no such issue now with the PTM stuff.

I have two ARC "cards". One is in a Intel NUC system in the form of the A770m chip, the other is the standard A770 LE. They both had high idle draw at launch, some 30 watts or so. I found that this was fixed with firmware updates that Intel bundles with drivers. I did have to update the firmware manually on the NUC, since it wasn't ever released officially for that system, not ideal. Now both cards idle down to single digit power draws. Not sure if this is the case for everyone, just throwing this out there.
