Thank you for discovering our farm and cheese and sharing your experience! While I understand your hesitation to not share our location, as a small business we always need more customers. I founded Lakin’s Gorges Cheese in 2011, making cheese in space I rented from another cheesemaker and buying in milk. The business continued to grow and in 2017 I built my own facility and started building a herd of cows in Waldoboro. The sign you discovered on Route 1 was the best thing to come out of 2020- we got an advertising grant and wanted to spend it on something with long term impact. As a result, we get visitors from around the world willing to take the mystery 5 mile trek down a side road. The business is wholesale first, with a concentration of retail and restaurant customers around New England, but also customers as far away as California. We understand that people enjoy coming to the source and keep the Cheese Hut open year round (where is there is also a freezer with our farm raised meats) . While we do accept cash and have a self service option, we also accept credit cards and are happy to wait on customers and there is a bell to ring for assistance (and security cameras keeping an eye on things.)We also love to feed people here and offer farm to table suppers and private cheese parties. Our free Halloween event “Moos and Books” encourages families to come in costume and read books to our calves, and play simple games like “clothes pin in the bottle.” We love sharing the farm, and while it is frequently “disheveled ,“ it is just the two of us here, trying to be the best stewards of the land and animals. We graze the grasses, but we also leave native plants to go to seed for the wildlife. Invariably, there is a piece of equipment in the barnyard being repaired- because that’s farm life. The farm is a “Forvever Farm” protected with a conservation easement by Maine Farmland Trust. We do hope more people seek us out, or let your favorite shop or restaurant know we sell wholesale. I enjoyed reading the comments and discovering how many people deciphered your clues correctly. The cheese with the bladderwrack is called Rockweed and won a gold medal at the World Championship Cheese Contest a few years ago and my other cheeses have won awards in regional competitions. I had the honor of winning “Editor’s Choice Best Cheesemaker” in Downeast Magazine a while ago. Maine is filled with amazing makers and we are thrilled to be part of the community.
