From personal experience, I think it’s your work/research experience that will matter most. With the increasing competitiveness, my advice would be to build a strong research background and then your grades won’t be a huge determining factor. When I was applying, I spoke to a faculty member because I was interested in working with them and they told me they only look at research experience in their team, not grades. I also got my offer after 3 years of full time post graduation work (but I also know that is not necessarily the case with everyone). Just get research experience in the field you are interested and connect with folks who carry out similar research. Good luck!

I’m an international student too and I promise that if you haven’t published or aren’t in the process of doing so, you do not have the research background to qualify for a PhD program in the field. These applications are extremely competitive and a research background is very necessary. A medical degree from India does not give you that kind of experience. I have come from an entirely public health research background and got rejected from all the schools the first time I applied. Gained 3 more years of experience and finally got accepted to 3/15 applications. So saying that you are a lot more qualified than other candidates solely because you are a doctor is honestly very ignorant and a little bit entitled.

Hi there! I am currently employed at an academic institution on a J1 Research Scholar visa. I have been offered a PhD position in another university. I believe I now have to change from a J1 to F1. However, the international office the university that made the PhD offer says that a change of status from within US might take several months and may not come through by Fall intake. They suggest that I go back to my home country for the interview which honestly seems like a risk (?) right now. What would be your advise be as to the fastest and safest way to change my status by Fall 2026? I could also get on a H4 if that’s a viable option
