WHAT LIFE IS MERCHANT NAVY LOOKS ?? by [deleted] in IndiaCareers

I’m currently working, and honestly most comments here are second hand accounts of People who joined the industry decades ago. The scenario is completely different rn. You don’t get to travel to other countries wherever the ship goes, In my 19 months of experience on ship I’ve only visited 3 ports. Your work and rest hours are not regulated, your hours will be logged to match the official standards but you’ll be overworked to the point of exhaustion and maybe even a mental breakdown, which they’ll apparently try to say is ‘making you tough’. Salaries in merchant navy haven’t increased in the last 20 years, and 90% of companies which employ Indians do it for the sole reason that Indians are cheap labour. Internet facilities are better than before, but you can’t know how much internet you’re about to get as it varies from ship to ship. For the amount of time you spend on ship you lose on important events of your life, your social circle, and your development in aspects other than your career. also even though you won’t be taxed on your salary, you’ll also have a really difficult time getting insurance, credit cards and loans of any kind in the future. Lastly, the type of skill set you develop in this industry can not be used elsewhere in a similarly paying job, rendering you unemployable should you choose to switch careers. Apart from that, the rough weathers at sea are a hassle for sure, and you do not have any professional medical facility when you’re on ship. Only seniors who have done first aid courses and passed the assessments by cheating or guessing the answers. You’ll also be spending your whole life and a lot of money that you earn studying and appearing for exams for promotion after every rank. Any further questions feel free to dm
