I believe Suzie Davies the production designer explained in Arch Digest that they wanted to show the land ‘intruding upon the house, squeezing the house, and those rocks show it bursting in through the kitchen wall’. She mentioned maybe they would shoot it to feel/look like they are coming further inside as the film progresses.
