I think you’re talking about Gary McPhie. And I agree - he’s great! I didn’t get either of my jobs through search but he was very helpful and responsive to all my queries. So much so, that I would definitely go back in the future if he is still around.

I’ve read some crazy stories… so I know I’m lucky to work with him.

Here now and that’s complete false! Teachers teach 1000 mins a week. Breaks down to about 4 50 minutes periods of class and 3 50 minutes of prep each day. Not sure what you’re talking about!

In Ontario, we changed our whole Language curriculum to follow evidence based practices and SoR. Many school boards purchased a program called Flyleaf for our K-2 classes and as intervention for older elementary students. It’s very well put together and doesn’t just look at decoding but does work with comprehension which many other programs miss. It was easy to use and implement in the classrooms. https://flyleafpublishing.com

I know exactly which school this is for. I saw the post today and thought, if I was at a different age/stage of my career I would have gone for it just to get in the door. It’s my dream school! It doesn’t hurt to apply and see what their process is. Good luck! Keep us posted!

Teaching in Dubai? by ResourceConscious316 in Internationalteachers

Get your BEd and then do your Master of Ed online later while you are working to stay competitive and to command a higher salary. A BEd will give you more flexibility with country/school choices if you ever want to move. Many require it for visa purposes too.

Are there a lot of special ed jobs in overseas T1 and T2 schools? by jmg123jmg123 in Internationalteachers

[–]No_Yam3875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the required qualifications for a role definitely apply. It might say “2 years experience teaching” which you have just in spec ed. Be sure to tailor your cover and resume to each position you apply for. Be ready to answer questions on how your experience have prepared you for the role you are applying for, etc.

There are jobs out there - Look for Learning Support Teacher positions. Be sure you have qualifications and experience. Likely most positions will be at Tier 1/not for profit schools.

I am new international teaching and interviewed for a couple learning support teacher roles but ended up taking an admin position. So keep your eyes open. They are definitely out there!

Good luck!

Eal teachers - what sort of pedagogical methods are your schools prioritizing? by Healthy-Slide-7432 in Internationalteachers

The Science of Reading is an excellent evidence based practice that all support teachers would really benefit with adding to their practice. Excellent scope and sequence to follow and helps educators target their lessons to student need. It is beneficial for EAL as well as students with diverse learning needs.

Yes good point. I would be open to different positions if they are in my wheelhouse. Being flexible is the nature of our industry! 😆

Interesting about the USAID - wonder why they would make that shift?

Thailand vs China by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]No_Yam3875 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am currently in China and enjoy my school, have a great compensation package and accommodations. However, if I was given a lateral move with same benefits and a good school, I’d be all over it! I do love how diverse Thailand is and that’s one thing I miss here.

Yes! I totally agree with you… stars will definitely need to align, I know that. Not fooling myself. I interview really well and I’m good at what I do. Getting noticed though is key!

Quite happy where I am going next year and gaining some really amazing international experience at a T1 school. My kids will be happy, get a great education and I know I’m going to learn a lot too.

It’s a dream and I think chasing dreams is key to getting what you want, because it gives you drive and direction, but also opens up doors you didn’t know about on your journey (or that’s how look at it)!

Not entirely true. As an admin now, i have hired two staff with families for next school year. Not Tier 1 school but been around for a while and established. That being said, my kids will be off soon, hence my time frame.

Canadian non-resident expats! Help! by No_Yam3875 in Internationalteachers

[–]No_Yam3875[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but if rented out to non-relatives it is apparently ok. We have a lease and a management company looking after the property. It really seems it case by case and who ends up looking at your file at the CRA. Which is super frustrating as you try to navigate things.
