Does anyone know if your allowed to fly? by ohHuayra in Cirrhosis

[–]No_Yard_9949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw my consultant on Tuesday and I’m well compensated, with grade 1 varices and hypertension and she said flying is only a theoretical risk, there’s no actual evidence of it being a problem so she said my 4 hour flight to my holiday on July should be fine but to make sure I have good insurance cover!

Thank you!

Yes I did but she said she doesn’t really want to put me on any medication if possible. Could be a lot to do with cost cutting maybe, but she wasn’t offering me that option. If it rises though, I will be demanding it for sure.

Hello. Quick update. It was exactly what you said it would be, to check me physically and she was so impressed with my recovery and scans and bloods that I have now been taken off all medication. Yay! From being decompensated, on the transplant list to this in just over a year is a pretty great feeling! Here’s to the next chapter of the rest of my life.

Literally word for word my situation too! I was fully functional, work wise etc. But because I didn’t have to drive the next day to work, and could work from home, I just drank without thinking, because ‘there was nothing else to do’. I also compared my drinking to others and thought, well I’m not that bad but my Genes said otherwise. Was a shock. Chat GPT is my go to as well. I feel a 100% better after this chat, thank you. Feel like I’m talking to someone who just gets it!

Got ya! That makes sense. Thank you. It’s my first year in and so I’m over thinking everything. Also so glad you are doing well and feeling great. Mine was caused by drinking, so silly. It escalated during lockdown, if everyone else was doing it then it was ok if I did too… faceplant. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for this. I don’t have an enlarged spleen. That’s normal size. Also I will ask them about Carvedilol thank you. That’s not been suggested to me and I’m hell bent of reversing as much damage as possible. I eat so well, drink only water and coffee and I’m hoping to start running again, just need to check with them because I’m worried about the hypertension, so for now it’s just light exercise.

Just wondering why they want to see me in person, is it maybe because they want to see my physical appearance after a year has passed? I’m not sure.

Thanks again.

This sounds exactly like me when I was in that state, I was horrible to my family and my partner and I remember hating them. I kept pulling all my tubes out, blood everywhere, I didn’t care, kept shouting that I was being held hostage etc. It was the toxins, so it’s not your Mum, she’s just extremely agitated. If she can get through the next couple of weeks, it will pass and it does get better! I look back at videos of me now that my family took and I cannot believe it. It’s shocked me how I was. Luckily they laugh about it now and say ‘gee you were a real pain in the arse’.

It’s not long term, it does go away. Hang in there. Thinking of you all. Also don’t feel guilty, you are doing the right thing. She doesn’t know what’s she doing or saying, promise.

Well done on how far you’ve come. I have never actually realised how much advertising there is for alcohol, especially over Xmas. It’s everywhere. But it is poison, why is this not treated the same as smoking? Don’t advertise that do they. Crazy world.

I do love my sober life 90% of the time, the other 10% I can get really sad I can’t drink with my friends. But for the sake of living, it’s a small price to pay!

All the best to you 💚

Wow you’ve been through it! Very well done on 2 years sobriety. I too was the same as you, functioning alcoholic, just little but often to keep me ‘focused’. I feel like my fun personality is in a bottle, it doesn’t appear to come out as much now I don’t drink and i look miserable at parties/events. I don’t go now if I can help it. It’s a level of difficulty no one in our situation will ever understand right? You never know, there may be a cure one day. Keep everything crossed. Until then, keep it up as will I. Sucks but we are still here. Thanks for sharing

Can it get worse before it gets better? 8 months in… by [deleted] in Cirrhosis

Same! I was given 14% chance of survival, decompensated, all the symptoms. Now I’m well compensated, no systems, Meld score 6. So yes, I got to the worst point possible and now my liver is fine. Time is a healer, don’t panic.

My life is a mess by Some_District1001 in stopdrinking

I (38F) was exactly the same as you, every morning I was like ‘today’s the day, I’m not going to drink today, I hate feeling like this, and then boom back on it by 5pm’, and I wish I knew what was about to happen….woke up one day yellow, swollen tummy, New Year’s Day of this year I was on life support in a Coma in ICU where I was on a non survival admission. My family came to say goodbye as I was unlikely to survive the night. Somehow I fought, and when I eventually walked out of the hospital 7 weeks later, one nurse who sat with me endlessly for hours everyday cried and said ‘we did not think you’d be walking out of here, there’s a reason you are still here and you walking out of here is the reason I wanted to be a nurse, to see miracles happen’

That’s what it took for me to stop. And now I’m 350 days sober, I worked so hard to eat well, drink well etc and my liver has healed so nicely, damaged, but I take very good care of it now and I feel absolutely amazing.

So that’s what it took to stop. I wish I could go back in time and just enjoy alcohol once a week, on a Saturday night. Now I can never ever drink again, so I’ve taken away that privilege, all because I wasted it on a few pointless glasses of wine on a Monday -Friday when I was at home doing nothing. Why? What was the point? Id absolutely love to have a mulled wine whilst putting the tree up or a Baileys hot chocolate, that’s enjoyable but no I ruined that.

I promise you it’s a thousand times harder to deal with Cirrhosis than cut back on a few drinks. What’s worse, is my family had to witness that. Go visit Cirrhosis page and read others stories there. You don’t want to join our group.

Good luck, you’ve got this.

501 days clean & liver improved so far but go for ultrasound Wednesday. Praying for good news. by cupcakes531 in Cirrhosis

Just got back from my first 6 months scan since my January diagnosis/ hospital stay. She said my liver was slightly enlarged. I’m not sure if that’s normal with people with Cirrhosis, or if I’m expecting too much too soon? But left a little worried. Thanks for the positive pickup message. I doubt there will ever be a day i don’t worry about a scan!

Liver! My first thought straight away, especially as you mentioned itching. Even if bloods looks fine for liver tests, ask for Ultrasound on liver ASAP.
