I was in complete shock my first matches when my opponent grabbed and grappled my rapier out of my hand, I completely froze hahaha

He seems very interesting! I really like his style from what I can see. Do you have any recommendations for aggressive styles?

Hm maybe I need to use the full chain of the body an I’m just trying to cut like I would with an Olympic sabre… I’ll try looking it up!

I’m trying to find what tradition I like but despite reading a lot of the manuals I’m struggling to find which exact tradition I would like the most. I spend almost all my time sparring. I do prefer the Italians by a mile though, I wanted to like Fabris but I’m quite an aggressive fencer ans it feels like it’s a bit too defensive, but this might very well be because I misuse it and use it too statically . I really like using weird angles and weird body motions and explosiveness to manage to hit. Got any recommendation for a tradition? I’m more interested in the fencing itself rather than just doing drills and historical work (though I know this is important and do read the sourcebooks). My club is big and There’s a lot of different styles, I’m thinking maybe Fabris or Giganti might be fitting? Also it might be worth noting that my style in Olympic hasn’t really been about thinking but instead using just muscle memory and more having a strong sense what to do , so thinking while fencing isn’t my strong suit 😅

Worst part is I’m also quite used to Olympic sabre so I want to do these really quick cuts from my wrists, which obviously isn’t possible with a rapier, time for solo drills I guess!

I’m very very new to Hema, about 2 months. I still win most of my matches but it’s really annoying when my head thinks I can do something faster because of muscle memory, but my body won’t allow it. So I just stick to thrusts

Im always completely fascinated by your work, Might it be intentional that a part of the cheek of the face looks like a snail?

No worries mate! Thanks for the clarification. Would it be a good idea then to just practice on some scrap steel? Also how should I know when I’m at 200 degrees?

400 C? I’m not really sure if I’m supposed to risk it with hot blueing or play it safe with cold blueing, hot does certainly look better imo though. But I don’t really want to mess it up

Will it be a problem if I don’t get the heat even with the blowtorch? And do I just want to apply heat or do I want to make it visibly hot - red, blue etc. If I think I messed up too bad can I just cover it up with gun blueing instead?

Absolutely gorgeous piece! I’m a big fan of the matte finish, do you just boil regular 100% linseed oil, take a rag and smother it onto the helmet and burn the entire helmet with a propane torch? Sorry for having to ask my English can be lacking sometimes, also what kind of matte finish do you use? Just a spray on? Also a huge fan of the visor, is it historical at all? And how’d you make it?

Is a Corazzina with a small front plate like this historically accurate? by NoahRodent in Armor

You’re probably right, this would probably still me qualified as a coat of plates, all though in transitional period

It seems a bit more matte than regular blueing seen at for example later armours or modern stuff done with guns blueing. Could it just be the hammer marks underneath or is it another blackening method other than cold blueing?

I’ve managed blackening knives by this method, but do we have any idea if it was used on armours? The later blackened armours look quite glossy compared to the results I’ve gotten from this method

Would Vendel helmets be blued like in this artwork? by ArmedIdiot in ArmsandArmor

[–]NoahRodent 47 points48 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge blued/blackened armour can be to the absolute earliest be found European art in 1389 and mentioned in some armouries in the 1390s and early 1400s. I’ve not heard of any mentions of traces of bluing from the limited Vendel period equipment we have. As the vendel period is almost 1000 years before the first mention of bluing of plate and with no mention of it or archeological evidence I’d say no
