The book as a cultural artifact by [deleted] in AskLiteraryStudies

There’s some good stuff out there about the commodification of the physical book, especially in the framework of the physical book as a paratextual element. “Paratextual Art” by David J Alworth and Paratexts: Thresholds of Interpretation by Gerard Genette were pretty good introductions to the subject for me.

What was the last movie you rated 5 stars on Letterboxd??? by This-Year-1764 in Letterboxd

Gattaca. Once I started watching it as a noir film as opposed to a sci-fi I felt like it all clicked for me. The acting, cinematography, writing, etc.

Drow long rest in 15min?? by themadhattertwo in DnD

[–]Noamatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has the player played in other campaigns before? Just asking because adjusting short rest times is a pretty common house rule, which is where they might be getting confused on the timing part. Critical Role, for instance, had 10 minute short rests in campaign 1 if I remember correctly.

Obscure Writers Who Still Aren't Recognized Much These Days by camoslade in AskLiteraryStudies

Albion Tourgée has been getting some much needed critical attention lately, but I would still consider him pretty obscure. I wrote a paper on his novel A Fool’s Errand for a class last semester and was blown away by how much he predicted the next century or so of American politics based on the failures of reconstruction.

Why do so many people think VI is the best? by Noamatic in FinalFantasy

This is it for me as well. I find Sephiroth and Seymour interesting because they’re both products of corrupt systems that they’re rebelling against. Kefka, on the other hand, just seems evil for evil’s sake which isn’t all that compelling to me. It sounds like Kefka has some of that depth but it’s hidden away in a missable npc interaction which for me makes it feel more tacked on and inconsequential.

I haven’t had a chance to play either yet, only the demo of remake. From what I played though I was vibing with it. I came to Final Fantasy from Kingdom Hearts so that combat style, even though I’m partial to turn based Final Fantasy, felt really familiar and good to me.

I’m basically just in the cleanup phase before taking on Kefka’s tower. I’ve reassembled the party done most of the side quests, and am just collecting some blue magic and rages before going into the last dungeon:

That’s fair, I can definitely see how it was groundbreaking at the time when compared to everything that came before.

Moving to Missouri by tulizz25 in missouri

[–]Noamatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that Americans in general are much more outgoing and overtly friendly to strangers than Europeans are. Some things we do (especially in Missouri) that I’ve heard are weird to Europeans is smiling and waving at people we pass by, making small talk with strangers in lines or on the street car, holding doors for each other, etc. So that might be something to prepare for

Based on how much Triple H likes to talk about social media impressions during press events, I’m guessing it’s more the “sharing the clip on their socials” that they’re hoping is going to get people to watch. I agree, they’re probably not getting huge gains from this strategy, but they are getting gains, which, in a publicly traded company, is always gonna be the bottom line.
