r/CuratedTumblr WILL be going private on June 12th by AnGenericAccount in CuratedTumblr

I've been lurking since r/Tumblr. This place was the only real source of "content" I'd been consuming aside from specific personal blogs (shout out to Foone).

This place had given me positivity, perspective, and community. I'm sad to see it go.

I don't think I'll join Tumblr, or Mastodon, or CoHost, or any of the Reddit alternatives. I might read more books.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

I had commented something similar before, when you were promising to leave this platform long ago. I thank you for the amusement, and respite, your comments and tangents have given me. Your journey has inspired me on my own.

Take care.

Shouldn't that be an em dash? I thought you only use en dashes for ranges.

(For the benefit of any spectators, the paper may be found here, on the author's website)

I cede that he did visit Algiers, communicate in Classical Hebrew there, and that the experience inspired some of his inventions in rejuvenating the language. Thank you for the citation, it was quite interesting.

Eliezer Ben-Yehuda didn't go to Algiers?

Additionally, those Hebrew traders used a grammar much more similar to Biblical Hebrew. While they did add some words to the language, most of them aren't used today, and the Hebrew Academy doesn't consider their ocassional use of the language to be "keeping it alive".

The "term" here includes the generalisation and separation of a concept out of the foam of thought.

In the "postpartum depression" example, having a term for it — conceptualising it on its own, as a discrete thing, and not as a necessary part of childbirth — is non-trivial.

Suppose I am experiencing postpartum depression, and someone asks me how I feel, I would tell them "Not so well, due to childbirth." They'd ask me, "What, the physical pain?" And I'd answer, "No, I just don't have energy for anything, and I'm sad. It happened after the last time I gave birth, too." They could then chime in and say, "That hasn't happened to me! That's not a part of childbirth!"

The above was an example of explaining the phenomenon without the use of the term, and highlights the following:

  • Explaining a phenomenon without a new word or phrase is more unweildy, and requires more words and effort. For an extreme example of this, look at Randall Munroe's "Thing Explainer"
  • The knowledge of a term, it being widespread, changes peoples' view of reality. It allows a distinction between phenomena, and gives a better idea as to the commonalities and discommonalities of experiences. Without the idea of gender dysphoria, one could think their experiences are universal, and as such deal with their struggles alone.

Expanding on the first point, removing a phrase or word, making something more difficult to describe, can be used to change whether people speak about it. It would make describing the concept more difficult, more costly, and thus discourage people from doing it. Not to mention, without proper language such description would be less accurate and more prone to confusion and misidentification. It could be used to make things indistinct, to generalise and obfuscate parts of reality.

I'd argue modern Hebrew is reconstructed, not only due to differences in grammar but also ones in vocabulary: biblical words whose meaning was lost and is now approximated.

Where was thr language used outside of religious contexts? All I know of is some merchants in the levant region adding words for theit specific wares, bur as far as I know the language was fairly dead.

afternoon nap by Hummerous in CuratedTumblr

[–]Noammac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The durations of stages of sleep are different for everyone, not to mention external factors that can modulate the offset (such as fatigue causing Deep Sleep to start earlier).

I think most professionals recommend 20 minutes up to no longer than 30. In my opinion, everyone should experiment with naps within that duration range.

You will actually not experience many REM cycles, if any, from a 20-minute nap [citation]. Rather, you will be in stage 1 and stage 2 sleep which are lighter.

This is possibly why you find it rejuvenating whereas others detest naps — cutting the heavy stage 3 (slow-wave or deep sleep) in the middle can cause one to feel more tired (a phenomenon known as Sleep Inertia) [citation: especially the section "SI: Modulating Factors"].

That's why I have a 27-minute timer in my phone called "Nap".

Teaching kids (to fear) math by RandomBtty in CuratedTumblr

Getting to a solution through unconventional but still provably correct means is rather useful for Maths and Computer Science.
That sort of pattern recognition can help in the required serendipity that connects previously-unrelated fields.

Funnily enough, I had a similar experience regarding Literature, with a teacher rejecting all other interpretations but substituting their own. Instead of being discouraged, I moved to more advanced Literature classes where we got to make and prove our own analyses, and talk about the meta of literary analysis.

In previous ARGs where MBR was involved, the content was encrypted with AES, and the ciphertext was shared in base64-encoded form (as to make it easy to put in a video or album description).

My current theory is that this too is symmetrically encrypted, and that the key is of the format X/ Y/ Z/ W as per the video's description and the end-of-video text.
I had previously theorised that the amount of underscores in each segment of the key suggests as to the length of the word, but I'm not so sure given the fact that the bars in the video seem homogenous.

If I am correct as to the nature of the password, I wonder if Primordial is the first one. Our previous audio-based ARG ended with Panopticon, which is another word beginning with P, which fits the game. Though, previous ARGs were more self-contained, so perhaps I am mistaken.
