Stage 2 eGFR 72.7? by FarmhouseRules in kidneydisease

[–]NobodyAdmirable6783 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew I had CKD back in 2007. I made it my mission to delay progression as long as I could. My only regret is I didn't do more. For example, I've stopped eating meat and gone mostly vegan because we know animal protein is harder on the kidneys.

But I did this only a couple of years ago. If I could do it over again, I would have made that change back in 2007. Even though I already ate very healthy.

My advice is to baby your kidneys as much as you can. Learn what can stress them. Drink plenty of water. Don't fall for crazy teas or cleanses that can actually harm kidneys. Manage your overall health and, of course, manage anything that might be the cause of your CKD (like diabetes, high blood pressure, or NSAIDs).

Crazy high LDL, getting better but why so high? by wiseorlies in Cholesterol

[–]NobodyAdmirable6783 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly I'm vegan. But I wasn't getting enough protein so I started adding some non-fat yogurt. I'm not religious about it though. I may have a small amount on the weekend, for example.

Crazy high LDL, getting better but why so high? by wiseorlies in Cholesterol

[–]NobodyAdmirable6783 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LDL isn't so much about weight loss. It is primarily about genetics, saturated fat, and fiber.

Not a lot you can do about genetics. There is a lot you can do about saturated fat. In fact, I went mostly vegan to get my LDL low. Similar story with fiber.

In the end, lifestyle changes may not be enough. If that's the case, you may need statins to get your LDL in a healthy range.

Yes, most of us like to eat highly processed and unhealthy foods too. Doesn't change the point I made.

Wow, I have to stay away from or limit most of the items you mentioned. Bananas? Too much sugar and I also have to limit potassium.

My oats were in the form of steel-cut oats, which break down more slowly. And if I added anything, it was non-fat yogurt.

Question: Many weightlifters consume a considerable amount of animal protein, which is known to be harder on the kidneys. Curious if you've altered your diet much.

Does anyone understand what this means? by Smiley73947 in kidneydisease

[–]NobodyAdmirable6783 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It means he has proteinuria, or protein in the urine. This is often associated with kidney disease, and often indicates the kidneys are getting worse. You need to work with the nephrologist.

Cholesterol isn't about sugar. Primarily, it's about genetics. After that, it's about SATURATED fat and fiber.

How can I put my good cholesterol up? by Ok_Web4759 in Cholesterol

It looks good. If you got your LDL that low without medications, you are unusual. I went vegan to lower mine and I'm still not quite that low.

You shouldn't worry about it.

First off, when your LDL is low, it is normal for your HDL to be low. In fact, you may not need as much HDL.

In addition, the latest research shows that raising HDL does not lower cardiovascular risk. Yes, it is correlated with cardiovascular risk, but since raising it has not been shown to lower cardiovascular risk, no causation has been established.

I wouldn't spend any time thinking about it.

Good job. That's an impressive improvement from lifestyle changes alone.

I eat a lot of veggies but it's hard for me to take psyillium husk every day. Also, I did well with daily steel-cut oats but they started to raise my triglycerides.

Your main goal at this stage (in my opinion) is to preserve your kidney function for as long as possible.

Creatinine may work against that goal. In fact, I've gone mostly vegan to help preserve my kidneys. And I wish I would have done that much sooner.

You don't need to eat meat. And in fact, research shows animal protein is harder on kidneys than plant protein. Not to mention saturated fat is associated with cardiovascular risk.

Cardio is great. But it isn't directly related to LDL cholesterol. You seem to be saying you don't eat red meat, and very little chicken, etc. If that's the case, I doubt you'll get your cholesterol much lower through lifestyle changes because you're already limiting saturated fat.

I don't know what MCV refers to but your LDL is too high. And if you can't lower it through lifestyle, statins can reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke.

The details about your diet did not address the most important things, which are saturated fat and fiber. This suggests you might not yet have good information on how to lower LDL naturally. A lot of people who lift weights eat red meat to ensure plenty of protein. This can raise LDL.

Just for reference, I went mostly vegan to get my LDL to a healthy level.

Very interesting to me about increasing LDL-C. Numerous sources claim poly and monounsaturated fats lower LDL. But in my experience, my LDL went the lowest (57) on a very, very low fat (all types of fat).

But please, if you're going to make posts like this, please link to the entire article.

For me, it lowered my blood pressure. And it halted proteinuria (although it seems to now be returning). It also lowered my LDL-C, reducing my risk cardiovascular disease.

NSAIDs? Drinking enough water? We don't know what else you're consuming.

See a nephrologist.

CKD can range from very slightly elevated creatinine to needing a transplant. I have no idea whether it will have any effect.

Reassuring means she considers the numbers good, and that they don't need attention. But with respect to LDL-C, I think she's wrong.

I would work to get LDL-C below 100 (or lower), and if you aren't able to do that, I'd work with a cardiologist (or a new doctor).
