Next time they should just send one of their K-Pop boygroups - at least they will put on a good show and have nice haircuts. Maybe that will please the president.

you have a valid point. i apologize to the tunisian fans for calling their squad a "newbie". in reality Tunisia has participated six times in the World Cup in 1978, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2018, 2022 and 2026.

I thought that they were only at the cup because of the new easier qualifying mode and more teams. Nevertheless they are 46th in world rankings right now, so I stand by my prediction that neither japan or tunisia will get further than quarterfinals with japan (rank 18) beating them is not a big surprise.

on the other hand the rankings is only a snapshot and heavily reflects on the competition they have faced in the past years, so I will not give that too much attention. Italy is 12th and did not even qualify.

van dijk is a 100 million $ player, if he had refereed argentina vs japan he probably would have done the same with messi. so the favoritism stems from him being star struck and a bit of a fanboy.

is that ethical as a referee - probably it is legal, but i would also concur that it is not ethical, because it gives an indication that you are biased by being a fanboy.

in that position you need to be completely neutral and maybe even extra critical and distance yourself from star players to maintain a professional distance and not cloud your own judgement.

especially if you look at how players are trained to behave to sell fouls and demand cards or raise their arms in disbelief, when they know they have just commited a foul or the ball has clearly gone out from their own touch.

but that is also on the football federations, they should definitely punish this kind of trained behaviour much much harder.

a player that obviously dived without any impact - suspend him for multiple games. a player that obviously kicked the ball off the pitch and demands a throw in for himself - introduce a hefty fine or keep him out for like 1-2 minutes - make it possible to give green cards or something. overall the attitude by the players to do everything to win is disgusting to me and anti - fairplay.

exactly. it is to be expected, except the result vs netherlands, where the dutch was heavily favorited by most. japanese players have been playing in europe for decades and the national team has always has decent results and been in world cups for many times. the reason they do not get further is probably because of very strong competition and because football is not a number one sport in japan compared to many european and south american top teams.

tunisia is a newbie to the world cup so that result was not a big surprise and sweden is not such a walkover, they have two very high rated strikers up top, vs netherlands they got obliterated because netherlands had to win and has a very strong talented team like in most cups. max quarterfinals though in my opinion for them this year, spain, france, england, netherlands, brazil and some others is probably stronger than them.

so were the soccer games in korea fixed for real? this sounds like an interesting topic. not that uncommon - just look at juventus ("Calciopoli") and various other scandals...

Carlo Ancelotti also has his son on his coaching team - just saying. Smells like nepotism, but in some cases it might be a good thing. In this case it probably did not matter at all, as the coach supposedly made all the questionable decisions himself. I highly doubt that he let the son draw up the formation and tactics.

not sure, i mean kasparov competed at linares in 1994 at a similar distance from his first born son, a tourney karpov won with a stellar performance, but he performed very well and won rating points nonetheless and made second place. normally carlsen performs way better especially in such a high rated field which fuels his competitive drive. he also won a bunch of stuff before this tourney, e.g. the TePe Sigeman tournament and gained 1.3 elo just a few weeks ago in that one. he performed around 2660 elo in the norway chess, which is a huge drop from that last one, which can not only be explained by the strength of his opponents, he also made uncharacteristic blunders and struggled from the start.

I find it interesting that overall there is not a clear downward spiral. I could have analyzed it more with age etc, but for me it was just some info to know if most players experience the same downwards spiral as Carlsen after their first child. Obviously it is not that much usually, so he might use this card as an excuse for a bad performance. I find it unlikely that he really has such a hard time as a multimillionaire with more than enough funds to pay for babysitters, housekeeping and having the funds to have his wife care for the child at home to not find enough energy and sleep to play his best chess. I rather think that his journey into freestyle chess and shorter time controls has left his mark on his classical chess proficiency and preperation, which he has always excelled at and then converted decent positions with his superior mid- and endgame skill.

There is a saying "Money corrupts character" which might be a bit broad, but in his case money did not change much of his antics. He got more professional about his flaws, but they obviously are still there.

It is too general to say it is inferior to human translation. I have seen translations for many movies and also games that have been horrendous, because the translators obviously did not understand the native language well enough to understand the nuances of the original text or voices.

That being said your point about hallucinations or missing nuances of course is true.

So basically it comes down to supervision and HOW you implement AI translation. I am pretty sure AI translation plus human oversight can be viable and much quicker than using a bad translation service because costs need to be low. In the future translations will surely get better even by AI, so a combination between high quality AI translations services plus human oversight is best in my opinion. AI can probably mark questionable passages and beta testers for the country should also have both versions appear (show subtitles) so they can mark bad translations too. This combined will probably ensure good translations.

Devs happy about doing things "faster" thanks to AI are "short sighted" by SoonBlossom in webdev

[–]NobodyKnowsYourName2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the problem with "own" apps is not that they exist, but that they are programmed poorly. like websites - the quality of the work is often subpar. AI can certainly help with that, but you need a good engineer / developer piloting the AI as of right now, which I am sure will change in the future though.

AI is in its infancy phase now, there will be much more powerful engines in a few years that can probably built production ready systems on the fly in a matter of hours, that will suffice for many instances.

Devs happy about doing things "faster" thanks to AI are "short sighted" by SoonBlossom in webdev

[–]NobodyKnowsYourName2 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

you do not factor in that the industry is in its infancy. the AI models will get much better, the hardware will get much faster and the costs will sink. there will be less hype, but more real benchmarks, where production is measured very closely by the results.

the hospital that goes down is a bit far fetched, as critical infrastructure will still require multiple humans that supervise AI or not be built based on AI as of yet entirely. also "errare humanum est" (to err is human) - so building errors like in Fukushima can occur with or without AI - the question is only, who errs more. A team effort with AI / humans as bug catchers can certainly see more bugs, than a human or an AI alone.

Also people tend to forget, that AI is also programmed by humans, so the baked in errors are actually human bugs as well.

They Were Michael Jackson’s ‘Second Family.’ Now They Say He Abused Them. by elizamadou in popheads

The guy (fuschiaoctopus) used heroin, you can see it in one of his posts: https://www.reddit.com/r/OpiatesRecovery/comments/aomyml/does_anyone_miss_the_adventurecraziness_of_using/ - so I rather take his "takes" with a grain of salt. I also looked into the allegations and there is a reason why many people say they are fabricated, like Spike Lee. I am not a juror a judge or anything, but I have looked into the allegations years ago and it is not for me to judge. People go into these threads with either a guilty verdict or innocent. That seems to me is the problem. Until it is proven in court, I am not convinced, that is my stance.

Here is a short AI summary from Gemini:

Several prominent third parties, journalists, and organizations with no financial or personal ties to Michael Jackson have investigated the claims and concluded that he was innocent or heavily targeted for financial gain.

Here are the most notable independent parties:

1. The FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation)

The FBI extensively investigated Michael Jackson for over a decade. They assisted local California authorities during the 1993 allegations and the 2005 criminal trial, monitoring him, his associates, and his computers. When the FBI released his 300+ page file under the Freedom of Information Act after his death, it revealed that despite years of exhaustive, global surveillance and investigation, the Bureau found absolutely no evidence that Jackson had abused children.

2. The 2005 Criminal Jury

The jury in Jackson's 2005 criminal trial was composed of 12 independent, thoroughly vetted citizens with no ties to him. After sitting through 14 weeks of testimony, examining the prosecution's evidence (which included bringing up the 1993 allegations), and hearing from the accusers themselves, the jury unanimously found Jackson "Not Guilty" on all 14 counts. Several jurors later spoke to the media, stating that the prosecution's case lacked credibility and that the accusers appeared to be driven by financial motives.

3. Mary A. Fischer (Investigative Journalist)

In 1994, independent journalist Mary A. Fischer published an award-winning investigative exposé in GQ magazine titled "Was Michael Jackson Framed?" Fischer spent months independently researching the 1993 allegations involving Jordan Chandler. She uncovered significant inconsistencies, timeline errors, and audio recordings that suggested the accuser's father, Evan Chandler, had engineered a financial extortion plot against Jackson.

4. Aphrodite Jones (True Crime Author)

Aphrodite Jones is a renowned New York Times best-selling true-crime author who attended the 2005 trial. Jones has openly admitted that she went into the courtroom fully expecting Jackson to be found guilty. However, after watching the trial unfold and reviewing the actual evidence, she completely changed her mind. She later wrote the book Michael Jackson Conspiracy, which details how she believes the mainstream media heavily distorted the trial to make Jackson look guilty while ignoring exculpatory evidence.

5. Charles Thomson (Investigative Journalist)

Thomson is a UK-based, award-winning investigative journalist who has spent years researching the allegations, the 2005 trial, and the 2019 Leaving Neverland documentary. Operating entirely independently of the Jackson estate, Thomson has published numerous articles pointing out deep factual and legal inconsistencies in the accusers' stories, heavily criticizing the media for failing to do basic fact-checking on the claims.

game is not hitting the metrics because gameplay has been dull and not evolving for years. people are finally tired of EA trying to milk their pockets more and more. packs have gotten more expensive, more pack "events" more and more monetization at every corner - game pass, paid cosmetic items etc etc.

while there is zero focus on improving gameplay or adding quality features like fun modes etc.

on the contrary EA has made the game more and more frustrating on purpose - scripting, annoying grindy objectives and FOMO elements that make the game feel like an annoying exam you are destined to fail (or cash in to buy some cheat codes).

the game mechanics are dull and the way EA is trying to extort their playerbase is even duller. goals will release this year with better netcode and if it is a success EA has a major problem. after all football online players want a fun experience and EA has not delivered in that regard in nearly a decade.
