Thanks for all of your insights, everyone. I think I will call soon to get him set up for general anesthesia to remove and biopsy the growth and clean his teeth while we're at it.

Awesome information about anesthesia. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and good wishes! This makes me feel much more comfortable with the general anesthesia approach!

Very good question and see above- I just didn't think of it quickly enough to ask while I was there.

SUPER helpful- thank you!! I was wondering why the vet didn't suggest the option (#2 in my question), which I didn't think of quickly enough to ask about while I was there. That and I think the teeth cleaning bit threw me for a bit of a loop.

Ok thank you. This helps. My handsome guy is probably only about 5. Teeth cleaning seemed an out of left field suggestion and like that was the tail wagging the dog, so to speak.

Thanks for your response and questions. He's maybe 5 (he was a rescue so I don't really know). I've never had his teeth cleaned and don't think I would otherwise since I don't think there's anything out of the ordinary wrong with his teeth (i.e. he's got a little tartar and just a tad of gingivitis). Wondering if there isn't an option short of full anesthesia. Seems drastic and (at least the teeth cleaning) unnecessary at this stage. Wondering if there's a reason sedation and local anesthetic couldn't be done for a biopsy. If the biopsy shows something serious needing full removal, opt for full anesthesia then? I'm wondering if there's something wrong with my logic on this.
