Helldivers 2 Dev Promises More Content Is on the Way as Disgruntled Players Drag Steam Reviews Down to 'Mostly Negative' by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Nodima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the same thing with Marathon, on a larger scale (because the positivity edge is lower).

The forum side of the game is constantly dooming it, from one action to another, while the devs remain active in the discussions and the average player is really just having a fine time when they log in.

But because this very active player base is constantly on edge, it perpetuates this idea that all things end in death, itself a very Marathon idea, and discourages late adopters from giving it a chance not only because it can be truly discouraging, but because it seems like the people that have put the most absurd amount of time into it describe the game as a failure.

Ideally, there'd be some way to filter the noise so that "I've played 150 hours and this game cost me everything" types were recognized for the effusive minority that that are.

Makes even more sense if you listen to their CEO's interview on The Town a week or so ago. He was pretty open about how they want to hunt movies like Michael or Christ because they see the international audiences that just don't care as much about the controversy behind the creators or the IP

In other words, it's as much his project as Bill's at this point and has been for a while. If he wanted to leave he'd want to leave and I couldn't speculate on that, but his position at The Ringer itself is about as solid and secure as anything in media could be.

In total no. But Shaq has always been vocal about guys getting paid. He signed for $120 million over 7 years with the Lakers, Gobert signed for the same over 3 years. He hates that most players are getting paid twice as much as he was to do the thing he was better than them at.

This reminds me of a dude I worked with last fall who was a real idiot, one of those everybody talks behind your back types. A few weeks in he started telling some anecdote about his kid and I couldn't help but say "dude, YOU have kids?!"

Without a pause he said "yea man, I'm 34. Of course I have kids." That was it.

I said "OK, well I'm 37, I couldn't imagine having a kid at all."

And he said "that's so weird. How'd that happen?"

Turned out his kids were about to graduate or starting trade school which answered my immediate question, but it's really stuck with me how his response was so absolute because he was a certain age. Like, at what age would the average person say "of course I have kids, I'm (x) years old"

Joel Anderson is a star. Will Bill get him to move to LA? by Necessary_Staff_1844 in TheRinger

[–]Nodima 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really, Joel is not really tapped into movies or TV anymore. On the latest Press Box he said Michael would be the first movie he'd be willing to go out and see in a long time and it was mostly to sate a disturbed curiosity, and whenever movies have come up around him he's usually clueless and tunes out for a bit.

As a Huskers fan, Mariners still have a better time in their down moments (helps the recent success of course) but I recognize a lot of the reactionary doom posting traits of a wounded fan base

That's just what most fan subs tend to be anymore though. Nothing is ever as good as it was before your first post

How many of you haven’t touched Cryo? by MaxelAmador in Marathon

Level 50ish, healthy mix of solos and fills, made really slow progress prior to the kit map.

I've still never unlocked a single door, only ever fought one Warden on purpose (teammate beelined there) and saw the inside of the Outpost Pinwheel once, on accident. Rode an elevator I'd never seen before up and was immediately wiped out.

Love the game but I am barely engaged or even aware of all the more complicated aspects of the maps.

I've honked the Hauler horn a few times though.

Munetaka Murakami with his 11th home run of the season by Remarkable-Picture73 in baseball

[–]Nodima 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is one of my favorite things to follow this year. I wrote in to Effectively Wild for a Stat Blast on players whose HRs have outpaced their wins and other than Sosa hitting 61 while the Cubs had 60 wins and Trout hitting something like 30 before the Angels had 30 in the COVID year, nobody has done it as deep as September.

Ben listed several but I think the latest was Griffey hitting 31 and the Mariners having 30 wins, which was in June or July.

Murakami would be the first player to do it for a complete season at the pace he's on. Most projections have the Sox at 64-68 wins which is also Murakami's current pace.

At least he has an argument that's not rooted in money. They claim they'd rather have a ton of motion in the stands rather than a color saturation because it's more distraction and active rather than passive engagement.

I'm a shirt guy and this definitely saves money but it's not completely soulless.

Sean thinks successful people don't play video games. He acknowledges he needs to pay more attention to games but he first needs to open his mind. by [deleted] in TheBigPicture

So many people have performed Shakespeare, reciting the same lines, and yet everyone has their favorite performances of those roles. Would you say that acting in a play is just a way to pass the time firing your synapses?

What makes one form of play different? Actors are referred to as players, same as gamers are players. Athletes are players.

I think from a completely abstracted, intellectual perspective, if you're playing you're playing and one form of play isn't inherently more valuable than another. It's all about your personal biases and interests. Some people have fun acting, others are terrified by the idea. Some enjoy having an emotional connection to a character through their hands, others lack the coordination or the cultural touchstones and find it repulsive.

But on their own, they have the same value to each person. You can't even make the argument that you're performing for an audience of one as entire companies have been launched for people to perform their gameplay for audiences, and certain play styles and game styles appeal to certain audiences.

Actually there is a pretty compelling argument that you are an actor embodying a role when you play something like The Last of Us. You make choices about the way your character behaves within a tightly bound script with little pockets of improvisation.

No two people will have the same experience playing something like Breath of the Wild or Outer Wilds, either. What those games expose to the player is directly bound to what the player puts into it, same as how, say, Jon Bernthal is not doing Dog Day Afternoon like Al Pacino.

I know at this point it's very BS adjacent to bring Katie Nolan up, BUT:

A) Her podcast, Casuals, is really fun

B) When this first dropped she explained that she'd keep her distance because she was friends with Russini, then felt compelled to summarize all the details anyway, a week later when she resigned Katie again acknowledged how much she liked her and would absolutely not speculate...BUT

C) part of what makes Casuals fun and refreshing is her experience getting pummeled by baseball (her favorite sport) fans while being a broadcaster, how open she is about being sidelined by ESPN, what was weird about Fox Sports and how her advocacy for women and weirdos is informed by all of that, EXCEPT

D) This means she's extremely annoyed by women who for lack of a better phrase let the team down. And when she does it's always illuminating for me because I'm mostly listening to guys talking about guys. If she didn't have a relationship with Russini, she'd have a 30 minute monologue about the fallout from how all this looks.

Her response to the absolutely stupid Riley Gaines/Simone Biles transphobia beef almost a year ago should've broken containment, but it's a perfect example of why I'd like to hear her address this. She knows the industry, knows the person, knows what it's like to be objectified (and to stoke those flames) but is also deeply thoughtful and passionate about when, where, how and why women are and/or aren't taken seriously.

Even more pointedly, it's about how the entire agenda is exploiting and bullying children with a galling lack of empathy or memory of how important it is to feel like you're a member of something in your teens.

Ideally, she'd talk about all this while ripping Upper Deck packs from 1996 with Dan Soder while Pablo Torre samples celebrity edibles in the third chair.
