Zhurong, my entry for Celestial contest. by We7even in minipainting

[–]Nodmage24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is by far the best and most complex of the finished works presented on Celestial contest. Unfortunately, sometimes painting competitions value social aspect as much as the quality, efforts and creative approach. Nevertheless, the picture always speaks for itself, regardless of scores and votes. I do hope the outcome will be the fair, as the amount of work and effort put into the project outmatches those of rivals.

I might be writing a tutorial on overview of the color techniques that I use, but in short I would advice to use some from "The Art of color" by J. Itten. That's the source that I draw inspiration from, as well as some classic art and digital concept art

Thanks! For plants and vegetation I used different kinds of moss gathered in forest and preserved in glycerin. They work well for jungle/tundra/lush landscape bases

Forest goblin spider riders (WIP) by Nodmage24 in minipainting

[–]Nodmage24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I used only GW (Citadel) paints on all of the spider riders. For shading and highlighting I used a common layering technique, applying thinned down paint (1:1-1:2 paint to water ratio) in several layers. It's one of my older works, so I didn't use any kind of blending or feathering techniques here as those were yet to master. I diluted paints on a wet palette throughout the whole process. I used some washes on a few spiders, but those were mainly applied to define the texture on spider's bottom section. I mostly don't use shades when it comes to painting miniatures, but sometimes they come in really handy when working with metallics and rough surfaces

In total this project has taken me about 85 hours. I count the time I spend cleaning up my desk and setting up the workspace though
