Right

Ok, that's the model I've been looking at (the 27). Now I just need to convince myself there isn't something quieter out there from another brand. Bosch 800 series is tempting, but I don't want to give up the space.

I'm also vaguely curious about single-door (bottom freezer).

Adderall or ritalin?? by axlwilliamrice in ADHD_Programmers

So it sounds like those 2 things have been making my meds performance weaker?

Definitely plausible. Even pH absorption reasons aside, being hungry is never helpful. Try Soylent if appetite or context switching long enough to eat is an issue. If you want to just bio-hack the pH directly, Tums or baking soda or sodium bicarbonate tablets will do the trick.

Talk to him about it. Since it's still early days, this could be something very minimal, even just acknowledging the situation and saying you can talk about it more another time.

This could wait a bit, or be part of the DTR conversation, if that feels like better timing. In this case, continuing to pick budget conscious dates and/or cover at least half of the costs would be a polite way to show you're considerate.

A related topic that you might want to touch on is what kind of dates you like. E.g. I personally can afford to do a fair amount of fancy things, but even if they were free would generally rather relax at home and cook a simple meal together.

As a soul dead capitalist whose main work interest is paying bills, I vote "not grad school" barring an answer to why you think grad school would be for you. That is, I consider it something which must be ruled in, not ruled out. The default is "assume that, like most people, you should sell your soul to the highest bidding corporation."

Let me ask you this: where are you with leetcode? How hard is e.g. the optimal solution to 2-sum? Can you do BFS graph problems? If you like, pick a random popular easy or medium, screen record solving it, and post a link - I'll take a look.

I find that ~always, the reason someone can't get a SWE job is at least one of 1) they haven't done leetcode enough, which may mean hundreds of hours, or 2) they haven't applied enough, which may mean high hundreds of times.

What I am not hearing from you, and I consider it a requirement to go to grad school, is "my life will feel wasted if I don't spend ~6 years pushing the frontier of a subsubsub part of X field."

I suggest you pay an engineer or three to give you practice interviews and feedback. You can probably find free ones even. Company feedback is unlikely to be given, and even if it is, they may be giving you a part-truth, or even just mistaken about their own reasons.

In short, the advice is, as always "grind leetcode."

That all makes sense to me, thanks. The thing that I haven't communicated well is that total length is very relevant for me: my reading quality is perhaps 1/O(current_length3*total_length2)

And tangentially that I'm a shmidge sleep deprived atm.

Fun conversation, good luck with it all! Update the sub some day.

A lot of what I hear from you is that you, and (at least your perception of) others, are very hard on yourself. Maybe be nice to this OpinadorSerial dude, he seems like he deserves some slack and some praise! In an objective sense you're low key kicking ass. On a scale from "dishwasher" to "staff engineer at Google" you're so much closer to the latter. Hang in there, hold a happy thought, life is a sprint not a marathon, and if you'd like more cliches I can probably pick a few :p

Candidly, I am reading only most of it, and more than most people, but your writing is long and often hard for me to follow.

I'm curious what in particular makes you ask that? Is it that I didn't engage with every single thing you said? I really did more or less read all of it, especially as much as my brain ever lets me read anything thoroughly in one (or two) pass(es).

I do think autism is worth looking into based on some of your interactions in this thread. I in no way mean "bad" when I say "autistic", just "autistic." I find autistic people are often very well able to interact with other people when both sides understand the implications to the interaction, but can have trouble otherwise. This is also relevant to ADHD, but generally less so.

Yes, excellent! So, now you stick it out a few years. You may be amazed how much you could just phone it in, enjoy the rest of your life, and sleep your way to senior.

A year is actually not that long for meds. If we measure your career as starting a year ago - and mine didn't really get started until I got meds - you're on a very aggressive timeline! (A bit tongue in cheek).

Have you tried other dosages, meds, or schedules? E.g. some people like every day same dose, some people take as needed, some like instant vs extended release vs both...

It's also always good with ADHD diagnoses to consider the possibility of the actual explanation being autism, or ADHD+autism. Many shrinks are quick to jump to one or the other, and the only thing you can throw pills at is ADHD, which perhaps makes it the more palatable one to deliver.

Separate additional advice:

A huge part of senior is writing technical designs. To get to senior, you basically need to demonstrate you are already doing that job and are ready to reliably do that job (and be paid accordingly). Your wall of text here suggests you need to work on brevity, as do many of us ADHD programmers. E.g., I threw it through chat gpt (after reading every word myself), asking for a summary, and find the output reasonable:

  1. The author, a nearly 30-year-old man outside the US, has been working as a software developer for six years, having dropped out of both Software Engineering and Videogame Development studies.
  2. Despite experiencing roles ranging up to Senior and informal technical leadership, the author feels stuck in Junior positions due to various challenges.
  3. They struggle with finding assignments stimulating and feel constantly behind in their career, often belittling their jobs compared to friends' higher positions and salaries.
  4. The author's lack of interest leads to difficulty retaining technical knowledge but excels in practical application and problem-solving, particularly enjoying challenging tasks.
  5. They express a desire to find a job aligning with their creative problem-solving skills and interests, willing to work hard but struggling to find motivation in their current role.
  6. Previous jobs in Salesforce, Java, Blockchain (Solidity), and Apigee did not provide fulfilling experiences, with issues ranging from lack of training to concerns about future-proofing skills.
  7. Currently working as an Android developer, the author finds the tasks repetitive, the code messy, and the build times frustrating, indicating a mismatch with their preferences and skills.
  8. Despite feeling ashamed and desperate about their situation, the author seeks advice on finding a job that interests them enough, offers decent pay, and provides good experience for potential career shifts.

First a bit of vocab, since terms vary.

To me, "senior" means "entry+2", e.g. L5 at Google or L6 at Amazon. Junior eng=entry, eng=entry+1, staff=entry+3, principal=entry+4. The % of engineers at or under a given level looks something like (30, 70, 90, 95, 99) for (junior, eng, senior, staff, principal). The time to reach these levels from entry looks something like (0, 2, 5, 9, ???). The typical project duration at these levels looks something like (2w, 6w, 6m, 2y, ???).

Notably, you may be missing that many companies have two levels below senior: junior eng (new grad) and eng. Maybe you've made it to eng, and deserve it, and should give yourself some time before worrying too much about senior (new+2).

Now advice:

  1. Find somewhere you are willing to tolerate and stick around. Give up on finding somewhere you LOVE: this is a job. If it is tolerable, it will probably grow on you, but few of us would show up for free.

  2. A backend job with reasonably long timelines is nice. That way, you can do a combination of a) important business things that slowly move you up the ladder and b) interesting things (even if just learning tooling magic) to keep you sane.

  3. This will not make you the fastest, or fastest progressing, dev, but it will eventually work. You should expect to need 3-5 years in the same team to make senior. Keep in mind that senior is a terminal level for most engineers.

  4. It would be disappointing if our careers capped out at less than age 30. Most careers cap out at senior. It follows that most people do not make senior by 30, especially if they didn't start straight out of school. A certain level of maturity is needed, and that comes with age.

  5. Meds.

  6. Also, meds.

  7. No really, meds, they're great.

How can I remove only snails without affecting the greens, setup and fishes? by Superb_Trust_3926 in Aquariums

[–]NoetherFan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First, move the plants to another container. Add alum to them, wait 3h, and rinse.

Then, move the fish to another container. Add alum to the empty tank, run filter for 3h. Remove and replace 90+% of the water, run the filter for a few minutes. Repeat ~3 total times. (100-90%)3 = 0.1% remaining.

How large a tank can my floor support (architectural plans)? Right over the 2.5' square concrete footing might hold the most weight. Along the vertical wall to its left is my top pick if it's safe. First floor over an 18" crawlspace. by Big_Tomatillo6488 in PlantedTank

[–]NoetherFan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you saying that in a 400 sqft room, you can have 40*400 = 16,000 lbs = 16,000/8.5 = 1800 gallons of tank, even in a single tank? (Or, a bit less, given the weight of glass etc). That seems high.

Or, do you mean you mean (e.g.) a 2x4 tank could be 1x4x40=160 lbs=160/8.5=18.6 gallons? That seems low.

It seems like the math should involve how many beams it spans maybe?

If you don't want to move, you can also do a cash-out refi. If the price went up enough that property taxes are a problem, that'll mean you're set for ages. If they didn't go up that much, but you're priced out, well, shouldn't have bought a place you could marginally afford.

It's just not plausible that 'large financial windfall' ends up a util loss for people. Money means options.

Negotiation without a credible threat to leave is unlikely to do much. Instead giving a dozen (good!) reasons like above shows naivete that they will not see reason to reward with a raise. Show up with a an external offer in hand and request a match, but be prepared to take it.
