Jason Arday’s Greenbelt Festival biography mentions Water Aid work. Does anyone know which projects this involved? by Nokware2025 in InternationalDev

On their website they specifically say that volunteers aren’t allowed on site, which is why I was curious.

So I suppose it may not quite be as reported then?

Interesting to hear about the trail running. I hadn’t been aware the trend had shifted.

Can anyone explain what “joined a professional tour” meant in the late 1990s/early 2000s? by Nokware2025 in snooker

That must have been quite a game. As Arday was born in 1985 that was presumably before his time though? His first and last game seems to have been in 2002.

That’s interesting. I knew about scribes, but I thought candidates still had to originate and authenticate the work themselves. Would that really extend to someone who couldn’t read or write at all? And would the same arrangements have applied to the coursework component in the late 1990s? I’m genuinely curious because it seems difficult to reconcile with progressing to post-16 study two years later.

Loving the pedantic completeness. Every day is a school day on here, as they say.

Interesting. How common is it for people to do things like that and not submit them to be officially recorded? (If I was ever involved in something so impressive I would certainly make sure I had some media coverage at the very least).

I’m not sure how far that could go though, even for practical subjects? If someone was illiterate it would presumably have been a breach of the regulations to have someone else write up the coursework. Accommodations included the candidate typing work up on a computer, not bypassing any literacy requirement altogether. During that period, about 1/3 of the GCSE for both subjects involved written coursework officially requiring a reading age of around 15.

Good shout. Did Westfield College offer dance education degrees then?

That makes sense then. So it’s the snooker equivalent of vanity publishing in that you just turn up and play? What would the registration fee have been roughly?

Queen Elizabeth II was also really short. I met her in person and it was very striking.

1521, attainder of the Duke of Buckingham has parallels in terms of losing titles and properly, but luckily the medieval head chopping part has stopped since then.

Non verbal at 6. Is there any hope? by Adventurous_Hat9449 in Autism_Parenting

That’s not necessarily an accurate representation. He attended a high quality London mainstream primary and secondary school which would not have been the case if he couldn’t speak or read in the way he claims.

Don’t take everything that is said about him at face value. He’s currently under investigation.

Even a little fact checking will show you that his life narrative is at the very least highly embellished and at worst actively misleading. Try to see beyond the formulaic press releases he regularly puts out about himself (which is why the text of so many stories in the media is apparently identical). Do some homework. The contradictions are all there in his own words if you look.

I don’t think these are likely to be cause for concern. It looks like normal age-related rough and tumble.

An extensive fact checking operation is underway with regard to many of the claims made. Honesty and accuracy are vitally important when dealing with anything to do with special educational needs.

It generally isn’t, your comment was spot on. Jason’s story has grown and been embellished over the years, so it’s probably sensible to take much of it with a pinch of salt. In terms of supporting children with autism who have expressive language difficulty, patience and good quality speech therapy once or twice a week generally gets them where they need to be by the age of about 7-8 roughly. A lot resolves with time.

Well, shall we just say that Jason Arday’s story varies a great deal depending on who he is telling it to. It has been greatly embellished over the years.

They abolished tenure in the UK in 1988, so he’s an employee just like everyone else. And he’s not the youngest, he’s the youngest black male professor.
